brocksamson7 Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 I was wondering if anyone can tell me what these black spots/holes are? Quote
Brian Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 Carbon pits?Where small lumps of carbon inclusions are forged into the steel. Just a quick opinion, may be wrong. 2 Quote
EdWolf Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 Wipe the fingerprints and oil the blade! Quote

EdWolf Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 Stephen, not barking. Just a warning. Sorry if my writing style is wrong. 1 Quote
16k Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 I think so,e are carbon inclusion as Brian said and the longish ones are ware, as Chris said. Ware are a frequent Kizu. Not very aesthetic but not serious and to be expected in a sword that has gone through ages and been polished several times. Quote
brocksamson7 Posted March 4, 2020 Author Report Posted March 4, 2020 Thanks for the responses. Is there a way to fix it? Quote
Stephen Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 Not really. Ive heard of them filled. Really no return in the long run. Silk purse sows ear ... n all that. 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 These are slag inclusions, the smaller ones indeed called pinholes. In this case they are probably remnants of insufficient or defective fire welding in the forging process. When they occur in the YAKIBA as shown here in some places (HA-WARE), there is no way of fixing. A good TOGISHI can fill them with UMEGANE in case they appear in the unhardened parts of the blade (KITAE-WARE). If not well made, these UMEGANE remain visible as repair which is not an improvement in beauty. 1 Quote
brocksamson7 Posted March 4, 2020 Author Report Posted March 4, 2020 OK cool. Thanks. It’s a signed Emura blade too. Bummer. Quote
Stephen Posted March 4, 2020 Report Posted March 4, 2020 Id like to see mei on that Emura, not done by him that's for sure. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted March 5, 2020 Report Posted March 5, 2020 Can you take another shot with the nakago towards you? The holes resemble uchikomi in Stephen's tozan link above. Quote
Stephen Posted March 5, 2020 Report Posted March 5, 2020 Not asking what you paid for it. Would like to know if you bought off ebay, if so which seller. Quote
Rich S Posted March 5, 2020 Report Posted March 5, 2020 Mei is legit IMHO; however the blade is not up to Emura's usual quality. Maybe a late period sword by a "new-ish" student? Rich 2 Quote
brocksamson7 Posted March 5, 2020 Author Report Posted March 5, 2020 I did not buy it on eBay. It was a local private sale. I know the guy though I can see where he go it. It didn’t seem right so I passed. Especially the amount of money he wanted. I know of Emura, but like a few people have stated, it didn’t look up to the standards of someone with as popular a name. The mei did look legit, based on several internet photos, but not the craftsmanship. 1 Quote
Tom Darling Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 Has anyone, ever observed, pinholes which have gone throughout the blade? Peace. Tom D Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 Yes, but not pinholes alone - there was other damage. Quote
ChrisW Posted March 6, 2020 Report Posted March 6, 2020 Perhaps signs of a recent polish to remove significant pitting that did not get the deepest pin holes? 1 Quote
