EdWolf Posted February 18, 2020 Report Posted February 18, 2020 I have a wakizashi and have some difficulty with naming the type of the hamon. From the middle of the blade towards the tip there are some cloud shaped object. Some connected to the hamon but some are just floating around. Is it save to call this tobiyaki? Not the best pictures but I hope it's good enough. Regards, Ed Quote
Fuuten Posted February 18, 2020 Report Posted February 18, 2020 I believe separate floating elements from the hamon are called yo and on the mune it's tobiyaki. But this is from memory, someone please correct me if I'm mistaken. Quote
Ray Singer Posted February 18, 2020 Report Posted February 18, 2020 Hardened areas on the mune are referred to a muneyaki. Yo are disconnected elements within the hamon which appear visually disconnected from the habuchi. 1 Quote

Ken-Hawaii Posted February 18, 2020 Report Posted February 18, 2020 Ed, for everything you wanted to know about the hamon, go to https://markussesko.com/2015/05/29/kantei-3-hamon-boshi-1/ Markus discusses "tobiyaki (飛焼き) – Lit. “flying hardening (elements).” Hardened spots in the ji which are not connected to the hamon." 1 Quote
