I wanted to go to Japan for the swords, but I ended up studying Jomon pottery. I saw lots of pottery but nothing like this....

Well, yes, I say it is Art, both pottery and tattooing...  Given the fantastic forms of Jomon pottery shown one wonders what was the cognitive map of the Jomon artisans.

Many similar tattoos here in Hawaii, based on ancient Polynesian patterns. Makes me wonder whether Jomon artisans & Polynesians ever communicated.

I have a theory that the Jomon culture, and the La Pita people ancestral to some Polynesian cultures, were linked by genealogy and culture....i think the Jomon went north and east, while the La Pita went south and east, both making it to the American continent. Anthropologists claim the La Pita were ancestral to the Samoan people, but quit making pottery when they got to Samoa due to the lack of clay. They must not have gotten off the tarmac at the airport...the place is full of clay.

Some of those designs come from Okinawa and from the Ainu.
