mas4t0 Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 I was studying the ground of a tsuba today and felt that without context, a certain region could be construed as cirrus clouds or the technique could be used to subtly represent them. I'd be interested to see any of the more unusual ways that you've seen clouds represented. Thank you. Mark 2 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 I like this one, probably MYOCHIN, 4 Quote
terminus Posted January 21, 2020 Report Posted January 21, 2020 I like this one, probably MYOCHIN, MYOCHIN sukashi 01.jpg Some more examples of a similar style. My favorite is Goto Ichijo's rendition: An incredible example from another artist: My personal favorite example of "subtle" clouds is this one from Kano Natsuo (I think?): 4 Quote

Michael 101 Posted January 22, 2020 Report Posted January 22, 2020 Two Jingo examples showing clouds 1) signed 3rd master. 2) Reverse side of an unsigned 5th master. Michael 3 Quote
mas4t0 Posted January 22, 2020 Author Report Posted January 22, 2020 Thin, light clouds shown by engraved lines layered in the landscape: TOMO_frontNEW1.jpg Thank you Jeremiah. I find that the difference in relief is small, but the way the clouds are rendered gives a significant feeling of distance between the birds and the clouds. Two Jingo examples showing clouds Those are wonderful. Thank you Michael. 1 Quote

terminus Posted July 29, 2020 Report Posted July 29, 2020 Saw this tsuba at the Keibay auction last night. Sold for over $20k usd. Not sure if it's real Goto Ichijo (no papers, and the mei is questionable), but the stylized design and carving of the cloud I really like. 2 Quote
Steves87 Posted July 29, 2020 Report Posted July 29, 2020 I'd like to add a cloud version too 1 Quote
Babu Posted July 29, 2020 Report Posted July 29, 2020 This is by Bushû Masachika (Yasachika) I've never been able to find any real info on him and my images do not do him justice. In hand it's dare I say even better than a goto master. I found a tsuba with which to compare the mei. 5 Quote

terminus Posted July 30, 2020 Report Posted July 30, 2020 Clouds, Moon & Waves... Clouds.jpg aww, I remember this Omori tsuba! very nice. Though how can you tell it's the moon and not the Sun? Quote
Tanto54 Posted July 30, 2020 Report Posted July 30, 2020 Hi Tony, Don't know for sure whether it is Sun or Moon - but the dark waves and highlights just makes it feel like the Moon to me... Here are some clouds on tosogu and the saya. Quote
Japan2112 Posted July 30, 2020 Report Posted July 30, 2020 Would the moon be silver and the sun gold? That is how my Mito tsuba presents them. 1 Quote
