MacTheWhopper Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 I am looking for Tsuba to complete my sword that will hopefully go with the style but I would like to see whats out there. Budget is a pretty big concern for me Probably 150.00 max but please send me what you have if its close. The measurements that I got from the blade are 7mm at the thickest point and 23.32mm in length. I have 7.55mm of distance between the Tsuka and Habaki so I think I have plenty of room for most options. The pictures are of the sword that I am looking to complete, for reference. Quote
Greg F Posted January 12, 2020 Report Posted January 12, 2020 Hi Kenny is 7.55mm between 2 seppa? Greg Quote
SAS Posted January 12, 2020 Report Posted January 12, 2020 https://www.ebay.com/itm/WW2-Japanese-Navy-Tsuba-6-Matched-Seppa-Kai-Gunto-Sword-Fittings-Serial-No-817-/183920445972 Try something like this..... Quote
MacTheWhopper Posted January 12, 2020 Author Report Posted January 12, 2020 7.55mm is the total space. So for 2 1mm seppa, I would need 5.55mm on the tsuba or if it were 4 1mm seppa, the tsuba would need to be 3.55mm. Quote
Geraint Posted January 12, 2020 Report Posted January 12, 2020 Dear Kenny. I hater to disagree with Steve but I think a Kaigunto tsuba and seppa, the set on the Ebay link, would always look like what they are and would ruin this koshirae. You don't need anything flashy, how about something like this one? https://www.aoijapan.com/tsuba-mumeiunsigned/ Bear in mind the overall size of the tsuba as you look, generally larger tsuba for larger swords and too big a tsuba would look a little odd on yours. All the best with your hunt. Quote
MacTheWhopper Posted January 12, 2020 Author Report Posted January 12, 2020 Dear Kenny. I hater to disagree with Steve but I think a Kaigubnto tsuba and seppa, the set on the Ebay link, would always look like what they are and would ruin this koshirae. I think that SAS thought that is was going to need 7.5mm after the seppa so figured i would need a bigger set but yeah, I would like to hopefully find a somewhat matching tsuba. Atleast matching to the period and style. It definitely doesn't need to be fancy. My price range may be a little low as well. I am not quite sure though. Quote
SAS Posted January 12, 2020 Report Posted January 12, 2020 I thought the point of your issue is that you have 7.5 mm of space to take up between the tsuka and habaki....how are you to do that without a thicker set? Is this not a military koshirae similar to or actually is the kai gunto? Quote
Greg F Posted January 13, 2020 Report Posted January 13, 2020 Steve I think its a handachi? Greg Quote
SAS Posted January 13, 2020 Report Posted January 13, 2020 Looking at Google images under kaigunto pulls up a lot of images just like the OPs.....I am not a koshirae expert, but given the amount of space he is trying to make up, the kaigunto tsuba set seems to make up the most space, and fit the theme of the koshirae. Maybe someone who has a kaigunto can chime in. Quote
Greg F Posted January 13, 2020 Report Posted January 13, 2020 Im not %100 Steve, just going by first impressions. Greg Quote
MacTheWhopper Posted January 13, 2020 Author Report Posted January 13, 2020 From another thread, I was told it was a handachi. I am no expert either Quote
Geraint Posted January 13, 2020 Report Posted January 13, 2020 Dear Steve. Here's one. The sword Kenny has is a civilian handachi koshirae and a rather nice one at that. It has resemblances to a kaigunto koshirae because they were based on tachi koshirae but it is most definitely not a kaigunto hence the observation that the kaigunto seppa and tsuba combination would look out of place as it will never be anything but kaigunto. An exact parallel would be sticking shingunto tsaba and seppa on a civilian katana, The extra seppa would certainly take up the space though. Good thread on handachi here, http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/6503-literal-meaning-of-handachi-applied-to-sword-koshirae/ Good place to have a look to get some ideas Kenny. All the best 1 Quote

MacTheWhopper Posted January 13, 2020 Author Report Posted January 13, 2020 Also, I was trying to figure out what kind of vine or leaf or pattern my fittings are to see if i could find a matching tsuba (probably impossible on a budget but it would be nice to see one) does anyone recognize what this pattern or what kind of flower or leaf it is is on the fittings? It kind of looked like the leaves that are on some gourd tsubas but I wasnt sure of that Quote
vajo Posted January 15, 2020 Report Posted January 15, 2020 What is with that tsuba? http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/30845-several-tsuba-for-sale/?do=findComment&comment=315648 No.2 Quote

Do you think though with how big it is, it might look a little off on the sword? Quote
