Ken-Hawaii Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 I don't think I've ever seen a sekigane that completely fills the nakago-ana. Is this unusual? Quote
Stephen Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 Not the norm for sure, i have seen them before. 2 Quote
b.hennick Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 Someone must have really liked that tsuba. Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 Iit doesn't even look to be properly fitted , looks like someone has shoved part of an habaki in there . Ian Brooks 1 Quote
Lee Bray Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 Probably a modern made addition done so the tsuba could be mounted without installing 'proper' sekigane or hammering the steel around the ana to fit a nakago. Adding sekigane can potentially damage the patina on the tsuba as you have to hammer it in to position which is a lot easier to write/say than do. I sold the tsuba below a long time ago and the new owner wanted to mount it so I made the 'odd' sekigane to facilitate that. I made the ana undersized so the new owner just had to file the sekigane a little for a perfect fit. 3 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted January 11, 2020 Author Report Posted January 11, 2020 Yours looks far more professionally done, Lee, & it explains what might have happened with the tsuba I posted. Thanks! 1 Quote
kissakai Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 Bruno - The tsuba looks better with the partial filling Quote
Kurikata Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 Bruno - The tsuba looks better with the partial filling Thanks Grev! That's mainly why I purchased it. It was in harmony with the global design of the tsuba. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 I had shown this before. It was probably used as keyhole cover at one time of its life. Quote
rkg Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 The piece that started the thread sure looks like somebody just used part of a habaki or something. I've probably posted these here somewhere before, but.... here's a couple of pieces I have with sekigane that surrounded the blade (at least at some point in one case): Best, rkg (Richard George) Quote
Rich S Posted January 11, 2020 Report Posted January 11, 2020 I guess they/you do whatever works to mount the tsuba. Rich Quote
