PNSSHOGUN Posted July 8, 2022 Author Report Posted July 8, 2022 There's a general grade parade sabre in the F&G with similar number & placement of chrysanthemum Mon. Quote

PNSSHOGUN Posted July 9, 2022 Author Report Posted July 9, 2022 Here is the sword from F&G, it was sold earlier in the year at the large (infamous) Llyods auction and now is on Ebay. The tassel and belt do not seem appropriate (company grade tassel and leather combat belt): https://www.ebay.com/itm/165491456147?hash=item26880f3893:g:pfIAAOSwWRdihxdi 2 1 Quote
Smee78 Posted July 10, 2022 Report Posted July 10, 2022 I wish all swords had a Mon, they are just so interesting and add a personal touch to the swords. 4 Quote

The sword is depicted in F&G and in Dawson's books. Both state it is for the Imperial Household. Ministry of the Imperial Household 1 Quote
Ontario_Archaeology Posted July 12, 2022 Report Posted July 12, 2022 So the imperial mons are not just for the imperial family, but for those belonging to the ministry of the imperial household, which is probably the case for 99.9% of swords with imperial mons on them since I don't see any swords really being confiscated from the imperial family, unless specifically surrendered under ceremony. 1 Quote
Lareon Posted July 13, 2022 Report Posted July 13, 2022 The Mon itself on this isn't anywhere strange but there is another addition to the end that is described as a representation of a kabuto. Post war addition or something period? 4 Quote

PNSSHOGUN Posted August 11, 2022 Author Report Posted August 11, 2022 Great find peter, that's a rare thing. Can we see the rest of the sword? Quote
Itomagoi Posted August 11, 2022 Report Posted August 11, 2022 Yes, of course: https://buyee.jp/item/yahoo/auction/w1060253321?conversionType=search_suggest_history 1 Quote

george trotter Posted August 11, 2022 Report Posted August 11, 2022 On the Imperial mon question, I think Matt H is on the money. Looks like the multiple kiku mons on that sabre indicate the Imperial department they were issued to. If it was an Imperial family mon it would almost certainly be silver...and only one mon. I have seen maybe 3 or 4 images over the years of what must be Imperial family member/relation mon...all silver. Interesting....thanks. Quote

The odds are in favor of it being imperial department, but on my sword, there are 7 silver mons. All I am trying to say is that a silver mon might not indicate actual royal family ownership. I'd love to see more imperial examples that is known to have belonged to imperial family members. Maybe we can see a pattern. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted August 12, 2022 Author Report Posted August 12, 2022 This Koshirae was owned by Prince Asaka Yasuhiko, each of the seppa had the Imperial crest. 3 1 Quote

george trotter Posted August 12, 2022 Report Posted August 12, 2022 Wow 7 silver mon....must be pretty senior person in a senior Imperial department. I think the most likely personal Imperial family mon is likely to be this type of single mon. Interesting topic. Quote
robinalexander Posted October 31, 2022 Report Posted October 31, 2022 What looks to be an embossed mon (?) on one side of the kabutogane of a Type 94 currently going to auction on Invaluable (USA). 1 1 1 Quote
robinalexander Posted December 16, 2022 Report Posted December 16, 2022 I came across a wakizashi today that had three mons located on the fuchi. All appear to be the same family line (haven't checked that yet) but interestingly there is gold and black one on one side of the fuchi and another gold one on the other side. The mei for this tanto is currently on on the translation thread. Rob 1 1 Quote
