OnTime2Day Posted December 16, 2019 Report Posted December 16, 2019 This is my grandfather's other sword handed down. A Yoshihiro wak that was in Gunto fittings during WW2. 1. Older Blade? 2. Which Yoshihiro? I don't see any in the Nihonto Club listing that uses only 2 mei. Quote
Geraint Posted December 16, 2019 Report Posted December 16, 2019 Dear _________(Insert name here). Please add your name to your posts as per the rules. With just this to go on your task is almost impossible, so many smiths signed as Yoshihiro. We can be fairly safe in ruling out the earlier ones as this form of sword is not produced in the earlier periods. A shot of the whole blade flat on rather than sloping away will help get the period from the overall shape, add some dimensions and we might get close to a time frame. You can probably rule out Bizen and Mihara smiths because of the nakagojiri. Nice niju habaki and don't worry about the stains, just surface rust. All the best. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted December 16, 2019 Report Posted December 16, 2019 Take a look at the photos in the For Sale section to get an idea of what we need to help you. This post should also be in the Nihonto section, rather than under Translation Assistance. Mods? Quote
OnTime2Day Posted December 22, 2019 Author Report Posted December 22, 2019 Thanks all. Took me a bit, but here is some info and couple better pics. Thx, Ryan Nagasa: 44cm Nakago: 12.8cm Kissaki: 3.1cm Sori: 1cm, deepest curve 17cm from munemachi or 39% of way up the Nagasa Motokasane: .6cm Sakikasane: .6cm Motohaba: 3.1cm Sakihaba: 2.3cm Hamon: temper looks Chu-Suguha, but polisher looks like he used a Notare highlight? Hada: can’t tell Mune: Iori-mune Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted December 22, 2019 Report Posted December 22, 2019 Sugata is Shinto. Suguha hamon is always straight, Ryan. Notare is an ocean wave. Don't mistake the hadori polish for the actual hamon - they are sometimes related, but not always. I'm pretty sure you realize that, but want to make sure. Your closeup shows what I think is itame hada, but I'm not sure. Quote
OnTime2Day Posted December 23, 2019 Author Report Posted December 23, 2019 Thank you Ken! Any takers on smith they think this 2 Kanji Mei May belong to? Quote
OnTime2Day Posted December 24, 2019 Author Report Posted December 24, 2019 My sincerest apologies all. Here is a post with pics consolidated. Easy on the rookie. Odd that one side of blade, darker Chi-Suguha temper seems very evident in the right light. Other side, the polish highlight overwhelms it making it look like a Notare? Maybe a stylistic preference by polisher? 2 Kanji Mei more common in older blades? Quote
16k Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 Different Hamon on different sides do indeed exist. I really can’t tell the Hada. The condition of the blade isn’t good enough for that. In the one pic where we can see the nioiguchi, I think I see a ko nie deki Hamon, but I may imagine it. Quote
