My First Nihonto Katana. Well I finally took the plunge

Hello,

Well I finally was able to acquire a Nihonto Katana (that I could afford)  I have owned various Wak's and Tantos so  I am excited to share with the group and would welcome any opinions. It's a Efu jyu NobuShige dated 1864.

 

According to Hawley he is rated a 10 smith (Gendai started at 8 apparently) active from 1864-1865. Source Rating Reference NOB467.   Nihon Toko Jiten rates him as Chu Saku

 

Specs are: 

 

Blade Full length  97.5cm

Temper length     74.3cm

Sori                     1.1cm

Hole                    2

Widith                 3.4cm

 

The Blade is signed Efu jyu Minamoto Nobushige tsukuri/Bunkyu 4 koushi nen 2 gatsu nichi

Nice to see someone new to collecting go for a later katana.

 

Its very wide at 3.4cm, and looks well made and nice that its fully signed with papers.

 

The pictures for me are not clear enough, obviously much better in hand.

It looks like the same smith as the katana i bought 2 years ago.

But i never found more info than the info i required by the members here .......

If you use the "search " option and search for " Nobushige " you will find the topic .

Steven, there are probably very many ways to collect these things. At least judging by what kind of blades people prefer.

I will hijack the discussion probably, or just troll it a little, but I think the question of what would you want your first sword to be is actually quite deep.

Say if I were to go back years and choose for myself the first sword and lets just say limiting myself to what touken komachi sells, that would personally be something like:

It's funny but I actually just bought that daito with the gold inlay since I had the funds (Nice little Navy bonus for being stationed and having offbase housing in Yokosuka as well as the fact a katana I had bought (mostly for the mounts) had nioi giri, so I wanted a nice blade to study)! Looked like an Uda like you stated, so even with the flaws, I took the plunge. Not the most collectible school, but I always love theirs' and their predecessors' work. Tsukada-san and her staff are most helpful. The blade looks gorgeous, but I'm awaiting shipment since I don't have transportation to have brought it back from Tokyo to Yokosuka.
