PietroParis Posted November 11, 2019 Author Report Posted November 11, 2019 Hi Steven! Thanks for the tip, but I don't want to be selfish, and I'll leave it for you... Anyway, there's more where that comes from: Also described as "State is very good." 1 Quote

Tigerinbamboo Posted November 11, 2019 Report Posted November 11, 2019 Couldn't you use the first one for a study of delamination by expansive corrosion? Or states of oxidation? It's like a chemistry lab in your hand. Just making helpful suggestions...???? 1 Quote
PietroParis Posted November 11, 2019 Author Report Posted November 11, 2019 Well, my post was certainly not meant as an endorsement of this tsuba, but if somebody here buys it and makes a small fortune and/or interesting discoveries I'll gladly accept a beer... 1 Quote
vajo Posted November 11, 2019 Report Posted November 11, 2019 The idea of Steven has a charmant point. I like this. 1 Quote
PietroParis Posted November 11, 2019 Author Report Posted November 11, 2019 Somebody just bought the zombie tsuba! If the new owner is a member of the forum, I hope they will let us know whatever they find out about it. Cheers, Pietro 1 Quote
vajo Posted November 11, 2019 Report Posted November 11, 2019 Dead tsuba with intersting things. What is this? I thought a tsuba is forged from a piece or layer of iron. What is that shown in the arrows and how did they make that? By casting? Quote
Geraint Posted November 11, 2019 Report Posted November 11, 2019 Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZw35VUBdzo All the best. 2 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 Looks like EVERYTHING has happened to this poor tsuba. -S- p.s.- Geraint, my favorite Python sketch........'Dead?'....."It's resting.....Probably pining for the fjords." Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 Actually a good question, Chris. The corrosion likely shows the layering when the iron was forged and folded, although I wouldn't have pictured it like that. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 The superficial layers that withstood the corrosion look like lacquer to me. Quote
kissakai Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 I have one like this (but no as bad) I keep it as it clearly shows the layers due to delamination 1 Quote
vajo Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 Could the vertical layer be silver. Normaly the layers are horizontal. Jean did you have an idea how they forged it vertical? Looks not like lacquer to me. Grev interesting, could you show a picture of the tsuba? Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 Could the vertical layer be silver? Normally the layers are horizontal. Jean do you have an idea how they forged it vertically?.... Chris, as I wrote, it could be lacquer, but also a different metal coating that was less attacked by corrosion. It is certainly not caused by 'vertical forging'. I am always interested to learn from well made items, but I am afraid this one will remain an enigma in this late state of disintegration, as long as it is not in my hands for close inspection. 1 Quote
vajo Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 Btw they must have find a "tsuba" pit in Japan. I remember a German dealer who bought a number of TSUBA from Japan which were exposed to saltwater for a while. I believe he had hoped the potential customers wouldn't care about the corrosion issues.... Quote

They must have paid for "sponsored" status on eBay so they show up in all of my tsuba searches. Cheers, Pietro Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted November 12, 2019 Report Posted November 12, 2019 Pietro, Bottom line....this tsuba proves that the dead can live on. -S- 2 Quote

Ken-Hawaii Posted November 13, 2019 Report Posted November 13, 2019 Interesting for how the metal decomposed, not for the tsuba, I hope. 1 Quote

PietroParis Posted November 14, 2019 Author Report Posted November 14, 2019 BTW, I've found the perfect sword for this tsuba... Cheers, Pietro Quote
