Back from holidays for a shortwhile before the Moving.

 

I had a message from a friend requiring information about lacquer and as I know nothing about lacquer, I told him I will ask competent people about it :

 

To sum up the 2 following pictures : What is this kind of lacquer (name, kind) and how is it done? Thanks in advance for him -

It's called "Ishime" (stone texture). One way it's done is described here. However, I think that's Kanshitsu Ishime, "regular" Ishime is done with charcoal powder - but my memory is a little blurry ...

Jean, is it slick or granular? According Andrée Lorac-Gerbaud (l'art du laqué), if it is slick, it could be a kind of Nashi-ji called Usu Yasuri ko nashi-ji. It is done with metallic particles mixed in transparent urushi putted upon a colored (black or other) base.

If the saya of your friend looks like this below, this lacquer is called Kokushitsu

Mushikui Urushi (Mushikui = eaten by insects).

According ZVD, explain how it is made, needs 3 weeks of time.
