JimW Posted October 27, 2019 Report Posted October 27, 2019 A relative brought this sword back from WWII. It's unusual in that it has a small knife built into the scabbard. I have tried to research it but have been unable to find out much about it. Can anyone help to identify this sword? Quote
Geraint Posted October 27, 2019 Report Posted October 27, 2019 Dear Jim. This is a civilian sword from a period earlier than WWII. It is a wakizashi, the name for a sword under 24" in length from tip to tang, and it is in handachi or half yachi mounts. The side knife is a kozuka or little hilt and a kogatana for the blade. We all want to know what is on the nakago or tang. Just above the guard there is a small peg that passes through the hilt. If you can use a blunt instrument to push this out, have a look to see which side is larger and push toward that, then you should be able to disassemble the sword, taking note of the order in which the fittings come apart. If you can then get us a photo of the whole blade and one of the tang then perhaps we can help some more. All the best. Quote
JimW Posted October 27, 2019 Author Report Posted October 27, 2019 Dear Geraint, Thank you for the information. I may seek some assistance in removing the hilt as I am inexperienced regarding these swords and do not want to damage it. Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 27, 2019 Report Posted October 27, 2019 Please see below for instructions. Go slow, and do this over a bed the first time in case the blade falls. I only mention, as that happened to someone I spoke with recently. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://www.nbthk-ab.org/swordcare.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiLzuXBhL3lAhXPxFkKHcD9AmwQFjAAegQIARAB&usg=AOvVaw1LmE4s78xsA881SNc_Xmjt Quote
16k Posted October 27, 2019 Report Posted October 27, 2019 I think the shape of your sword is very interesting, Jim. I’m eager to see the naked blade! Quote
Michaelr Posted October 28, 2019 Report Posted October 28, 2019 Jim congratulations on your sword. I am by no means a expert and after a few years into Nihonto I still consider myself a newbie. I see that you are in Pennsylvania. If you are anywhere near central NJ I would be glad to assist you in dissembling your sword and taking more pictures to post here on the forum. This is the best place for information and to learn about all you want to know. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. MikeR Quote
JimW Posted October 28, 2019 Author Report Posted October 28, 2019 Michael, Thank you very much for your offer to help in dissembling my sword. Unfortunately I am in Southwestern Pennsylvania and it would be a long drive to New Jersey. I will attempt to remove the hilt and will post pictures when I have them. Quote
Austus Posted October 28, 2019 Report Posted October 28, 2019 Nobody mentioned NOT to touch the blade or clean anything. Just sayin'. Maybe a little oil? But not on the tang! Looking forward to the rest of the story! Quote
