Reassembled my armour

This armour has been boxed and out of sight for months. It feels great to have it in view again. I really dislike handling them as they are fragile things as we all know. Luckily the silk on this one is still sturdy. Always kept away from UV light. Btw I know the mempo isn’t attached correctly, will be redone

Great set of armour Mark. I have a Zunari Kobuto that I am very fond of and plan to one day complete the set with armour that look like it was made to go together as yours looks to me.

Mark,  Looks a treat, as does the Kaga dou. I'm intrigued by the mail item hanging up.  It looks like a mail covered belt worn under the yurugi ito of the armour. Did it come with it? I have one but mine has much more sparse mail. I wonder how often they were worn as you don't come across many.

Hi Ian. That is exactly what it is. It didn’t come with that armour, it was a separate purchase about 4 or 5 years ago. I haven’t seen another one since. They make a lot of sense for protecting a vulnerable area and the construction of mine has some interesting points such being able to store things inside. I will take some pics for you tomorrow.

 

I don’t know why they are not seen much, I suppose they were and are overlooked as being not important. I bought mine on ebay from a Japanese seller.

Mark,  I am reminded of a small accessory that all samurai would have but are very rare, and that is a small sleeve that fitted over the saya of the katana stopping it rubbing the saya of the wakizashi. I have one which is a simple tube made of rasha lined with silk that is shaped to fit around the kurigata region. Like the belts, minor items that nobody bothered about. I also have a few bad weather hilt covers that again were hardly every brought back by westerners in the 19th C.

That is one of the best I have seen. I have a very simple one that sides on the saya. Imagine being without one and taking part in the daimyo gyoretsu, marching perhaps weeks or even months with a katana bashing on your hip bone.

Hi Ian, here are some pics of the chain mail belt. Interestingly it has a pocket that would have had a draw string, perfect for keeping valuables such as gold/silver. A money belt of sorts. Mark
