Ford Hallam Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Greetings all, I've just completed a piece, that despite not being part of a sword, is ultimately derived almost completely from this tradition. This is classical Japanese metalwork, as practised by the masters of the past, but for a non sword wearing clientèle. Here's a link to a short slide show. Iron, shell, shakudo, brass, silver and little bit of gold ...I look forward to you impressions...and NO!...I can't do a tsuba just like it regards, Ford Quote
Taygrd Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Absolutely Beautiful, I truly envy your talent. Quote
John A Stuart Posted September 1, 2008 Report Posted September 1, 2008 Very beautiful work Ford. The wings are outstanding. What is the function of the piece? A cover for something? John Quote
Brian Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 John, I believe it is a stand-alone art object for display purposes. Ford, how many months did it take till completion? Amazing and extremely refined. Watching the whole process unfold has been fascinating and educational. http://followingtheironbrush.blogspot.com/ I love the way the light shines through those MOP wings, and it was a great idea to leave the iron open underneath them. Taking something as natural as a rock/stone, and expressing it in iron..it's hard to look at it as anything less than a natural formation. John....don't let Ford catch you using that "n" word It's banned on his forum I believe..artists hate the word "nice" :D Brian Quote
John A Stuart Posted September 2, 2008 Report Posted September 2, 2008 I have replaced the word with one more fitting. Unaware of the PC term. John Quote

DSweet Posted September 4, 2008 Report Posted September 4, 2008 Hi Ford, You finished it! Just amazing work, as usual. I was wondering if you would do anything with the underside. I would love to see some high res pics. Bungo said: ford, mass market that as a mouse milt Considering the time, and thought, Ford put into this particular peice, it would be quite the expensive mouse. -Donovan Quote
Ford Hallam Posted September 5, 2008 Author Report Posted September 5, 2008 ha ha ...It took me a while but I get it, Milt...a pc mouse...a whole range of them coming up :D Hi Donnovan, thank you, glad it does it for you . I'm going off the idea of posting huge enlargements of my work because although it does allow you to see every tiny detail it actually gives a very false impression of the intensity of such small scale work. If you look at the image of the stone in my hand you can see the effect of the wings is in fact very subtle, from certain angles the veins aren't actually visible, just the iridescence of the nacre. The images I posted are already double life size. Sorry, that's all you're getting...as it is the images have the lightness of the dragonfly and the impression that itis flying over the stone. Quote
DSweet Posted September 8, 2008 Report Posted September 8, 2008 My eyes will take any "candy" they can get . No harm, no foul. I just posted something on your forum in response, but you mentioned something here that i didn't touch on. I rather enjoyed the picture of it in your hand. Not only does it give the viewer a better idea of size and perspective, but the dragonfly and stone both appear less "flat". I am envyous of your work, as always. -Donovan Quote
