ww2colorado Posted September 21, 2019 Report Posted September 21, 2019 A guy has offered me a few blades and this was in the lot. Would this be a Japanese naginata? Looks pretty old, guy said they are veteran bringbacks from a family member. Any thoughts? 1 Quote
Ganko Posted September 21, 2019 Report Posted September 21, 2019 It most certainly is and probably from the 1600's Quote
Stephen Posted September 21, 2019 Report Posted September 21, 2019 Yes it is. Curious to why you would post it in military swords. Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 21, 2019 Author Report Posted September 21, 2019 Sorry guys did not mean to post it in the military sword section. I can get measurements and stuff later wondering what a general ballpark value for something like this might be? Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 21, 2019 Author Report Posted September 21, 2019 I will post more pictures this evening and am hoping to learn abit more on the subject of naginata Quote
ROKUJURO Posted September 21, 2019 Report Posted September 21, 2019 Chuck, that weapon is called NAGINATA and it has an unusually short shaft as we see them on NAGAMAKI. Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 21, 2019 Author Report Posted September 21, 2019 Thanks for the correction lol. I did notice the short handle. Hope to update later with pictures. Thanks, chuck Quote
Ed Posted September 21, 2019 Report Posted September 21, 2019 I suspect the pole on your naginta( ) was cut down for ease of shipping, as they can be 7-8 feet in length. You need to remove it from the pole in order that we can see the nakago (tang). 1 Quote
reeder Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Common mei, try it out. Been talking to him as well. You do know that one of his pieces is fake right? Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 22, 2019 Author Report Posted September 22, 2019 I have suspected something was off as seller seemed off and wouldn't get back to me . Quote
reeder Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Yea, took him quite some time to reply to my original message, like a month or more. It’s the sword with the handle missing the wrap that’s fake if you didn’t pick up on it. Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 22, 2019 Author Report Posted September 22, 2019 Reeder the same thing happened to me he didn't respond to me for about a month maybe two seems like he had me on the back burner for somebody else. Some of the swords looked kind of weird also thought I saw them for sale in different states. Didn't want to get into the katana swords yet I figured I would try to see what was up with this one first Quote
reeder Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Getting back to the naginata, you should give the translation a go before relying on someone here. It’s common and a well known signature. I won’t comment on whether or not it’s gimei, but he did say it was not papered. Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 22, 2019 Author Report Posted September 22, 2019 I am unfamiliar with the signature in question, also posted in the translation section Quote
Ed Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Very simple mei, though a high probability of gimei, very high. Quote
vajo Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Why is this in the sales thread? Is it for sale? I see no price? Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Yes, if you aren't selling it, then the Mods should move this thread to Nihonto. If you are selling it, then you need to post a price, per Brian's rules. 2 Quote
Jean Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Moved to Nihonto, Chuck probably means to say in the topic title that the naginata is for sale and what it is worth, to see if he buys it or not. Topic title is very misleading for the least.... Quote
ROKUJURO Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Chuck, there are so many fake signatures, and the few authentic ones are so expensive, that I remind you to buy the blade, not the signature! If the blade has no major faults and is nice to look at, why not keep it as a study piece? Always depending on the price-tag, of course! A GI-MEI item should have a GI-MEI price! Quote
vajo Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 Jean what is a gimei price? Can you say what you would pay for it? I throw a price in the ring: $1850 for this piece. What is the price that you get offered Chuck? Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 22, 2019 Author Report Posted September 22, 2019 Guys thank you for all the information, I will be holding off on this one as the seller seems pretty Shifty. I cannot get any more pictures or response out of the guy, something is off.... Quote
ROKUJURO Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 ....what is a gimei price? Can you say what you would pay for it?.... Chris, for me a GIMEI price reflects the facts. Seller and buyer know what they are talking about. In this case the photos do not allow for an estimation, but generally I think you are not too far, considering the whole package with a cut-off shaft. Quote
Peter Bleed Posted September 22, 2019 Report Posted September 22, 2019 From my experience, naginata with that signature are not common. This looks like a usual "duffle bag fitting" cut. I say this could be interesting. Peter 1 Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 22, 2019 Author Report Posted September 22, 2019 Guys thanks again for the response. I can take this no further as the seller is now unresponsive... I could not even get a timely response from him. Took him two months to get back to my initial email, and now the same thing.... I did tell him about the fake katana sword and his response was not too kind.... Now he will not reply. He basically wanted to know what i would pay for the swords and then when i told him about the gimei signature and bad sword he just dropped off.... Seems he may be looking for a novice collector to make the leap and buy the swords... He will probably email me in a month after some failed attempts to scam someone else... Guy seems shifty... Bad vibes... Quote
tbonesullivan Posted September 24, 2019 Report Posted September 24, 2019 Definitely sounds like it was for the best. If you're gonna spend money, you want to make sure it's in the right place. Quote
ww2colorado Posted September 25, 2019 Author Report Posted September 25, 2019 Out of nowhere seller sent me a message asking where I lived. Then he asked if I had any guns for trade. After that he fell off the face of the Earth again. Probably looking for someone else's Goods weighing his options not sure seems weird. Quote
