Vermithrax16 Posted September 16, 2019 Report Posted September 16, 2019 Greg, how much time do you have? 1 Quote
Vermithrax16 Posted September 16, 2019 Report Posted September 16, 2019 Here is one Markus Sesko did for me a while ago to show a sword had a fake signature. I have since used the example to inform my own studies: 2 Quote

tbonesullivan Posted September 17, 2019 Report Posted September 17, 2019 Damn. That example from Markus is amazing. Yeah, it really is. Back in "the old days" there were unfortunately no good resources where numerous authentic mei could be compared. The style is so important, and at the same time, is what make some mei difficult to read. Fake signatures are also put on there to get a higher price, so they generally are going to stick an important name on it. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted September 18, 2019 Report Posted September 18, 2019 And aren't we glad that they didn't have anyone like Sesko to show them the real mei! No reason to think they didn't have talented forgers back then, too. Quote
Vermithrax16 Posted September 18, 2019 Report Posted September 18, 2019 Even today; the example I posted I could show to people and they will argue to the death its: 1. Mei variation of smith 2. Smiths used all kinds of chisels, changed things over time 3. This sword is the one that's different It never ends, hence we will never stop seeing fake mei on swords. And Tsuba, any fitting, it never ends. You have to do the work. Quote
