If you are refering to the kanji characters engraved on the blade, since it is mentioned that they are modern, I would have to agree with you. Not done well, for no real reason, and just detract from the blade. Also ruin the value.

Original, well done, and tasteful horimono are one thing, but not this type of modern embellishment.

Sad.

it is not uncommon for heavily cut bonji to be used to remove and hide forging flaws. Even when cut nicely if the positioning of the bonji appears a bit odd, especially when added later, and/or the cuts seem a bit deeper/wider than usual, it should begin to raise questions.

To me it doesnt look like someone tried to hide kizu, it just looks like someone was really really stupid and engraved it. And i mean the sword i linked at the top. On the one Peter linked you can see the kizu really clear.

Franco,

Yep..that's why I said "Original, well done, and tasteful horimono..."

Horimono that are obviously not original to the blade when manufactured should be examined to see why they were done and if they are hiding something.

Let's not come down on the seller on this one...he doesn't seem to have done it, and is notifying potential customers that it was done recently. No hostage situation here :D

Actually, even though I don't see any reason kanji should be engraved into this blade, the engraving was actually pretty well done and neatly cut.

It bascially says this sword is for "the new collection group", has probably the owner's name engraved, and for some weird reason, has the character for "to drink" engraved also. Maybe the previous owner liked a little brewsky while admiring his swords?

It is totaly a flaws hidder to me if you look at the highlighted kanji, the cuts are sharp and well made for the most part, not the top of the line but do you really think that a top carver would waste his time on a kizu plaged mumei wakisashi? :) , the carver did all he could with the damage that was present and was smart enough to put more than one kanji and give it a meaning (presumably) so that it look less weird than a random kanji out of place in the middle of the blade.

The sell isnt fraudulous as it is stated the carving is new, no reasons to get mad over this if you ask me.
