The pigeon is much closer to the head shape but the mon on my type 19 seems to have some characteristics of both. Very interesting. I appreciate the lead! Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 1, 2022 Report Posted June 1, 2022 Andy, if you call it a dove, it sounds better. 1 2 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted August 1, 2022 Report Posted August 1, 2022 This Mon would've been identified before, however it is neat to see one separated and how long the pin is securing it inside the Kabutogane: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v1059297224 3 Quote
Lareon Posted August 1, 2022 Report Posted August 1, 2022 That's really interesting I've never seen one removed with the pin behind. Quote

Lareon Posted August 28, 2022 Report Posted August 28, 2022 I've got this Mon here. If kanji I think it's Takeuchi ? Seems to be a common surname 2 Quote

Almost looks like a kabuto or a bell? Apologies for the late reply Bruce! yes it's a small adornment that looks to be shaped like a kabuto. That was how it was sold . I've been away for about a month and when I'm back I'll take some photos of it with my camera. I've never seen anything like it before which usually gives me a pause (in a negative way) the whole sword actually was interesting. the blade is in poor polish and from 1428 but the signature is quite hard to read as it's partially lost (O-Suriage) the date is readable though. the Saya had been wrapped in leather cord too which is quite brittle so i haven't handled it too much. I've included a photo. I wont be home to look at it for a couple of weeks so i'll just use this one for now Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 12, 2022 Report Posted September 12, 2022 I wouldn't take it negatively. The whole rig is custom and unique. I love it! Quote
Butch Posted September 12, 2022 Report Posted September 12, 2022 Bruce do you think this was an attachment for a Mon ? or just some form of battle damage as the sword as defiantly seen combat use ? Thanks Gareth 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 12, 2022 Report Posted September 12, 2022 That is the normal place where Mon were attracted. Looks like it used to have one. Probably was removed by the owner at surrender, or it could’ve fallen off in the field. Quote
Lareon Posted September 14, 2022 Report Posted September 14, 2022 I meant id usually see it as a negative but in this case I didn't thus I bought it 1 1 Quote

MarcoUdin Posted April 29, 2023 Report Posted April 29, 2023 I replied on the other thread as well. Mon stands for Mokko 木瓜 (Melon), many families used it. 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted May 8, 2023 Report Posted May 8, 2023 Although it is not on a gunto, I did not know where to post this. I have a tachi with around 50 of these brass mons. Is this a variaton of the Tokugawa kamon? Many thanks! Dan Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 9, 2023 Report Posted May 9, 2023 Yes, but consider Matsudaira too, all part of the larger family. The fine detail of the Mon changed slightly with each Tokugawa Shōgun. 1 1 Quote
DTM72 Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 Better picture with more detail. I believe you are right @Bugyotsuji Matsudaira or any one of the many Tokugawa Shōgun. Quote
John C Posted May 19, 2023 Report Posted May 19, 2023 Hello: I would like to confirm what this one reads. I believe it is Aoki. If so, would that be a family name or a first name? Thank you, John C. p.s. It is on a type 98 showato. Quote
