stenbar Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 This is odd. Take a look at: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=006 alongside: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=003 They appear to be nearly identical until you look at the back side, where there are some slight differences. Was it common for kinko mixed metal tsuba to be turned out in large numbers? Quote
Rich S Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 That tsuba design (or exact design) has been done, re-done, copied, re-done, re-made, faked, etc., etc. about a quad-zillion times. I think even Fred Lohman has a modern copied version of it on his site for sale. Rich S Quote
Brian Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 I think the simple answer here is "yes" Often the fittings schools worked from pattern books, and would turn out quite a few of the same pattern. As we go through the Edo period, the later we go, the more copies there were of certain designs. I know little about tsuba, but don't think this would be termed a kinko tsuba though? Brian Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted August 20, 2008 Report Posted August 20, 2008 Evening all, The base element of the Tsuba looks very much like Tenpo style with the "Hot stamped" characters Ten, Kaze and possibly Kotobuki. Thanks for a great Forum chaps. Malcolm Quote
zuiho Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Hello, Indeed strange that two of these appear at once at auction. Strange , also, that these could never have been mounted on a sword since part of the raised design elements would lie under the seppa . The patina of the iron does not show any age, to my eyes. Probably tourist pieces with a design meant to attract the casual viewer (sucker). William G. Quote
russbellon Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 These are modern repros. Cast in one piece (including the sekigane!) and painted. I have seen them on Yahoo for awhile (and bought one for ~5000 Yen) and wondered when they would start showing up on ebay. They couldn't be mounted as the design goes well into the seppa dai. Quote
