cofor22 Posted August 14, 2019 Report Posted August 14, 2019 ... Yari with a punched Mekugi-ana? Conny F Quote
cofor22 Posted August 14, 2019 Author Report Posted August 14, 2019 Well that was an odd reaction to a very clear and specific question. Does that mean you would like me to elaborate? Conny F 1 Quote
Brian Posted August 14, 2019 Report Posted August 14, 2019 I would guess if they take the time to make a fake, they will take the time to punch the ana.Or it could be one that was used like many of them in a fire and has no hamon. The "neck" is more important to look at. Quote
16k Posted August 14, 2019 Report Posted August 14, 2019 My reaction was: How are you sure it is fake? Not doubting your opinion at all, but pictures are always welcome in that kind of discussion, if only to educate those like me who probably couldn’t make a real from a fake yari unless it is pretty obvious. 1 Quote
Gakusee Posted August 14, 2019 Report Posted August 14, 2019 Also depends on how it was mounted (eg as tanto) in some part of its life Quote
cofor22 Posted August 14, 2019 Author Report Posted August 14, 2019 Well question was if anyone have seen a, for instance, chinese fake with a punched hole. If so, a punched ana would not be usable as indicator of anything. As a gemmologist I am used to analyze Gems and minerals and separate synthetics and treated stones from natural untreated. Then it is good with indicators to speed up the work. Conny F Quote
16k Posted August 14, 2019 Report Posted August 14, 2019 Have never seen a Chinese fake with a punched hole on my part, but let’s not give them ideas! Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted August 16, 2019 Report Posted August 16, 2019 Or are you talking punched ana versus chiseled, Conny? Quote
cofor22 Posted August 16, 2019 Author Report Posted August 16, 2019 Enlighten me please. Hot punched or cold chiseled? Quote
cofor22 Posted August 16, 2019 Author Report Posted August 16, 2019 I was thinking: If noone has seen a hot punched Mekugi-ana in a modern fake yari. That type could serve as an indicator we have the real deal in front of us. A drilled does not rule out real deal. I know many other signs can be seen to be used but some times butcher "polish" and pitting hides hada as well as hamon. Quote
16k Posted August 17, 2019 Report Posted August 17, 2019 True, but unless the fake was made to really deceive and was aged, the Hada of a Chinese copy is really different and the Hamon too as they bring the hrc of the edge down rather than increase it. Quote
Gakusee Posted August 17, 2019 Report Posted August 17, 2019 Too much focus on drilling vs punching. There are many old blades with drilled ana due to shortening. One has to examine the actual blade rather than focus on what could possibly be a reshaped and modified nakago. 2 Quote
cofor22 Posted August 17, 2019 Author Report Posted August 17, 2019 Got it, thanks for your input. I will focus on the blade for guidance. Conny F Quote
