Hello there,

Just trying to see if anyone can help me verify wether this is a real or fake. I am being told this is from the late edo period (1700's nihinto katana). Any help is much appreciated.

Same as Paul:

1 - Chinese fake

2 - not enough picture of the blade, but the end knot of the handle is dubious. Please provide some pictures of the blade.

Anyway, be cautious, stay away from these « blades »

I am not really going to bother commenting on the first example, it's so bad that it's not worth discussing. The second one displays two of the major "tells" for being a Chinese made fake, the Ito (wrap) and the Habaki.

I suggest spending time on the internet googling pictures of real Nihonto and Gunto, and having a few (many) hours going through the posts here.

The first one you can see what appears to be the grain structure of what is typically called Damascus Steel. Real Nihonto are NEVER made this way. The grain of the metal in Nihonto is far more subdued and nowhere near as course.
