Anghammarad Posted July 25, 2019 Report Posted July 25, 2019 Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. I am new to the forum. And actually decided to register here because I had a query. Recently on a forum I visit, someone posted regarding the sale of a Nihonto (unpapered)He attached a picture of the blade with the Mei on the Nakago. And a separate image of the Mei supposed to be that of the smith. I was hoping to get expert's opinions on whether it was worth considering for a purchase or not. Thank you A Quote
John A Stuart Posted July 25, 2019 Report Posted July 25, 2019 I don't know which Bungo Takada Fujiwara Noriyuki this is. You have many to search through. It is legit, but, runs a whole gamut of possibilities. John Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 25, 2019 Report Posted July 25, 2019 Bungo smiths are generally not "hot" in the market and thus less likely to be Gimei. The Mei you posted vs the Hozon one look identical. 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted July 25, 2019 Report Posted July 25, 2019 Welcome to the forum, but please post your full first name, so we can address you correctly. Like everyone else new to Nihotno, I'm sure that you're anxious to own your first blade, but please buy a couple of books first, so you have some idea about what makes a blade worth buying. If you have to ask us, then you're not ready to spend your money. As we've told many others, you will get a lot more for the same $$ if you've done some studying! 2 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 25, 2019 Report Posted July 25, 2019 Anghammarad, welcome to the forum! If you browse a lot here, you will read many advices to this subject. First thing is, you don't show the blade, so we don't know what it looks like. The saying is: Buy the blade, not the MEI (signature)!Your thought is probably that a GIMEI blade has a lower value which is correct for most. But the NIHONTO world is difficult, so sometimes you find very good blades with a faked MEI. The price and value of a blade is also affected by its condition. Some blades are sold with a new polish which normally is a good thing, but not all TOGISHI work in the same way and quality. So you will have to evaluate many aspects of a blade to decide for a purchase, and your personal liking is the most important. If this is not helpful, please show us more pictures of the blade, perhaps we can point out more aspects of general quality (which is of course limited as we only have photos and not the blade in hand).. 2 Quote
Anghammarad Posted July 25, 2019 Author Report Posted July 25, 2019 Good evening again, thank you all for your replies.I wasn't concerned with the value of the blade per se, I just wanted to make sure it was not a fake blade that had a fake MEI on it.I am attaching certain pictures provided by the seller. I hope they will clarify some of the queries you raised ROKUJURO.Thank you all once again for your responses, it is much appreciated.@Ken, I will be reading up, you can be sure of that, ty, I know I am a neophyte in this arena, but I look forward to making myself more knowledgeable. Ken-Hawaii Posted July 26, 2019 Report Posted July 26, 2019 Nice blade, Ang. Do you have a shot of the completely-bare blade? Reading will add a lot more pleasure as you begin to understand how & why a blade was made. Quote
