Tengu1957 Posted July 22, 2019 Report Posted July 22, 2019 I just acquired this armor. The Kabuto is signed Myochin Munenaga and is heavy. The O-doshi is done in deer hide. I would like to learn who may have been ordering armors from this period. I assume like all armors it would have been costly so not a low ranking Samurai. Quote
Luc T Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 Hi Tengu, these armors were often a gift from a lord to their higher officials. Certainly not for low ranking servants. Quote
Luc T Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 Some were given to non-Japanese officials too. Quote
uwe Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 Hi Gary, may we have a picture of the mei? Quote
Rhk78 Posted July 23, 2019 Report Posted July 23, 2019 Possibly I’m wrong... but doesn’t this suit look late. Early Meiji? Maybe bowl is older. Frank Quote
uwe Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 Indisputable a late ensemble Frank! The recorded “Munenaga’s ” that come into question are placed mid to late Edo.... Quote
Tengu1957 Posted July 24, 2019 Author Report Posted July 24, 2019 The armor is supposed to be Bakamatsu with the Kabuto being older by 50 years or so Quote
uwe Posted July 24, 2019 Report Posted July 24, 2019 Bakumatsu, that fits. Yet, a nice armor, congrats Gary! Quote
