I wish the market these days was as strong as you guys are quoting. Been tumbling last year or so. Chinese buyers that were driving the market are no longer buying, and as I predicted a few years ago once they were out there’d be a significant correction. I just sold half a dozen NCOs, all matching, brass guard, nice shape, not a single one got even close to $1000 and interest was limited. Couple of years ago they’d all be $1000+ as fast as I could list them. I mean I have nice gendai under $2k with little interest. ????‍♂️

I recall seeing NCO's in the mid 1970's for $75 to $100 on a fairly regular basis here in the US. That would translate to approx. $360 to $480 today.

More like $750-1,000, as many prices are 10x today what they were in the ‘70s - Chevy camero $3,700; Dad’s house $20,000; gas .25 cents, in ‘70s prices.

Maybe closer to your figure Bruce,,,I was simply going by a online equivalency calculator. Either way $75 or $100 was a fair amount of money back in those days.

Heard a similar comment elsewhere. It does sound like the market has finally peaked and making a correction.

Everyone wants a diamond at zircon prices, the honest swords like Brandon had up for ages were all great swords at really quite decent prices, it puzzled me for along time why they stayed up for so long while showa22 ones flew off the shelves. The biggest disturbance to me is that people are actually buying the horrific hack jobs that "samuraimonkey" regularly flogs like a 3 week old dead horse.

Unfortunately this market (as well as everything else) depends on the US.   I have actually noticed a decline in good sales, since Trump came into power.  Whenever the stock market appears vulnerable, the market on the whole suffers.

Brandon is right on the mark.

As, I also mentioned;

It is now a question of who is buying?

1) Copper handle blades...rare but who is now willing to spend 3000$US plus

2) Mantetsu: Great blade, high quality steel. Recent market China. Like all things Asian...the trend to buy Mantetsu is declining.

3) NCO. Nice blade, nice mountings, if all original but again where is the current market(buyers)?

This, of course, is only my opinion

Cheers,

Greg

Like the housing market - what's good for the seller is bad for the buyer, and vice versa. Falling prices are great for those of us who mostly buy and collect, and are not buyer/sellers.

Hey David , I have seen Trump blamed for many things , but sword prices ? We should all get on board for cheaper swords.

Ha! "Make prices for the buyer great again!"

Trump being blamed for the sword market? Now I've heard it all.

Swords are certainly more expensive to buy from the US since Trump saved their economy from going further down the toilet. I'm just holding on until the Democrats get back in power and the value of the US dollar plummets again.

Thanks for the kind words, John.  I sent a pair to auction and the results weren't that great.  I just pulled the others, I like them and they look good in my collection!

Agree with Brandon,Chinese collectors are the reason NCO's and Mantetsu sword price went up.But now,China's economy start to slow down, and people don't have that much money to spend on their hobby, plus  Chinese buyers bought enough Japanese sword from US and Japan pass decade ,the market is saturated.

Can't blame Trump on the sword price.

Well,it's good for us collectors now!I think only the mint NCO deserve $1000-1200 instead of $1500-1800.For the copper handle,I think $2000-2500 is fair.Unless it's mint or very low number, then $3000-4000 is acceptable.

Interesting quotes on market values, impacts (Trump, etc) .  Ebay was a place to buy swords where I didn't have to worry about paying state taxes on purchases.  THAT CHANGED (for my state)  on July 1st and is significant if one buys high-end items.   Dan
