Ron STL Posted July 1, 2019 Report Posted July 1, 2019 Unsure is this is the right place to ask this, but how difficult is it to buy tsuba, fittings from the Netherlands and shipped to America? Are there costly VAT and custom taxes and fees? I tried to look this up but couldn't find a clear and understandable explanation. Thanks. Ron STL Quote

Surfson Posted July 1, 2019 Report Posted July 1, 2019 My understanding is no tax on antiques over 100 years old. I recently carried a couple tsuba in from Japan and with a certificate made out by the seller that they were over 100, the customs agent let me go through. You should just get a clear statement from the seller that they are over 100. It is true with swords too, which is why I haven't bought anything younger than Gassan Sadakazu! Quote
Fuuten Posted July 1, 2019 Report Posted July 1, 2019 I am unsure whether its the same for in or out, but importing something antique (like Nihonto), is 6% if 100+ years for the EU. Quote
Ron STL Posted July 2, 2019 Author Report Posted July 2, 2019 Thanks everyone, for the guidance. I was just curisous, since considering such a purchase, since decided against for other reasons. Ron STL Quote
Peter Bleed Posted July 2, 2019 Report Posted July 2, 2019 Some years back, I bought some VOC ceramics from Holland and had NO problems or costs. Peter Quote
