dhusker Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 Can anyone identify the symbols on this old scabbard? The seller told me they were family mons. Thanks Quote
DirkO Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 My guess would be Hojo-clan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C5%8Dj%C5%8D_clan A nice site about family-mons : http://www.geocities.com/kazenaga23/crests.htm Quote
Nobody Posted August 11, 2008 Report Posted August 11, 2008 The mon is called “Maru ni Mitsu-uroko (丸ã«ä¸‰ã¤é±—)â€. That literally means three scales in a circle. The mon does not correspond to only one family, so I cannot specify one. Shimada Kai (島田é) of Shinsengumi used the mon at least. Ref. http://www.bakusin.com/kamon.html The mon of Hojo-clan is also Mitsu-uroko, but the scales for the mon of Hojo are not equilateral triangles. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted August 12, 2008 Report Posted August 12, 2008 Zanshin said: i stand corrected ... I don't think you need to stand corrected, Zanshin! What you posted about the Hojo clan was essentially correct, but as Nobody pointed out, these Mon were used by many other people too. Hojo's flat scales were not contained within a circle? It is astonishing how different the Mon usage was by Bakumatsu. The uroko were dragon's scales, by the way, and not fish or snake, apparently. Quote
