Did anyone knows something about this 43 cm wooden figure?

I found it on a flea market today between old iron goods, lamps and old small furniture.

I thought it is Japanese so i grab it. It was really dirty and i cleaned it first with a brush, than with a wet cotton towel and after drying with some choji oil.

Thanks all for figure out that is Guanyin ( Guānzìzài (觀自在 / 观自在, jap. Kanjizai), the goddess of mercy.

Hi Chris,

Your right, I don't think there is much age here but still a nice thing.  Doesn't look Japanese to me, more likely it's a Balinese image of Guan Yin.

Cheers,

Thanks a lot for the input. Guan Yin is a nice point. What you think about the wood? Rose wood? I dont think it is teak. I thought i read a Kanji yama, but it could be only the line in the wood.

Hello Chris,

Looks well carved and agree, doesn’t look like teak..By the growth lines looks like a fast growing Indonesian wood that wood carvers can easily work with...Only my opinion and kind of stating the obvious I suppose but nice find..

Regards,

Paul..
