vajo Posted June 1, 2019 Report Posted June 1, 2019 Did anyone knows something about this 43 cm wooden figure? I found it on a flea market today between old iron goods, lamps and old small furniture. I thought it is Japanese so i grab it. It was really dirty and i cleaned it first with a brush, than with a wet cotton towel and after drying with some choji oil. on the right side a waterdragon, on the left side some big flowers maybe lotus? The face looks lovely Edit: Thanks all for figure out that is Guanyin ( Guānzìzài (觀自在 / 观自在, jap. Kanjizai), the goddess of mercy. 3 Quote
C0D Posted June 1, 2019 Report Posted June 1, 2019 Could be Kannon riding a dragon or this to me https://broomcloset.wordpress.com/2013/03/08/benten-Japanese-goddess-of-eloquence/ 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted June 1, 2019 Report Posted June 1, 2019 Hi Chris, Your right, I don't think there is much age here but still a nice thing. Doesn't look Japanese to me, more likely it's a Balinese image of Guan Yin. Cheers, -S- 2 Quote
raynor Posted June 1, 2019 Report Posted June 1, 2019 Definitively Guan Yin/Kannon. I see lots of these on temples and around people's shops when I wander around towns in Malaysia. 1 Quote
vajo Posted June 1, 2019 Author Report Posted June 1, 2019 Thanks a lot for the input. Guan Yin is a nice point. What you think about the wood? Rose wood? I dont think it is teak. I thought i read a Kanji yama, but it could be only the line in the wood. Quote
paul griff Posted June 2, 2019 Report Posted June 2, 2019 Hello Chris, Looks well carved and agree, doesn’t look like teak..By the growth lines looks like a fast growing Indonesian wood that wood carvers can easily work with...Only my opinion and kind of stating the obvious I suppose but nice find.. Regards, Paul.. Quote
John A Stuart Posted June 2, 2019 Report Posted June 2, 2019 Guanyin, Avalokitesvara originally the supreme creator from Hindu is a male deity being feminised by time to what we have now. Strange, but, true. john 2 Quote
