I carve spoons amongst other woodworking. This is my first spoon finished with urushi. It was quite a time consuming process, but a lot of fun. May do some larger items if my skill can cope. Appreciate any advice from more experienced tree sap slingers. Oh, and no rash yet.

Looks like a fine job Anthony!  Best advice is be patient and don't rush things, make sure previous coat is dry before proceeding, and your on your way.  Also, be careful, you've been fortunate so far but things can turn nasty.....proper ventilation, gloves,etc....and safety glasses aren't the worst idea.

Best of luck,

Finished some more spoons in the fuki technique. They are cherry, walnut or maple and each has 6-8 coats. I am working on serving boards and possibly sword stands and tsuba stands as well. Also, got my first and second urushi rash. Second time was not fun. Luckily, im in healthcare now and a steroid shot shortened my suffering.

Anthony,

that looks like fine work indeed! You chose the more difficult way (which I like) with transparent URUSHI; I think it would have been somewhat easier to work with filler and have an opaque coating!

Might I recommend a fine steak to go upon that board? Can't beat steaks and beer!

I would disagree. You can't beat steak and scotch!

Sure, you can! A nice, well-aged Cabernet or Merlot with the steak, & the Scotch, afterwards!

Anthony, if you happen to have woodworking equipment, including a vacuum, try doing your urushi under the collector while the vacuum is running. That's what my wife does, & she's never had a rash, although we do have to change out the filter more often.

Ken,

What a great idea!  I will give it a try on the next batch.  What does your wife make?

Mostly bowls that we turn. But, since we're both still amateurs at turning, the results have a long way to go! At least we have a lot of cool woods out here in the tropics.
