0331_usmc Posted June 1, 2019 Report Posted June 1, 2019 I carve spoons amongst other woodworking. This is my first spoon finished with urushi. It was quite a time consuming process, but a lot of fun. May do some larger items if my skill can cope. Appreciate any advice from more experienced tree sap slingers. Oh, and no rash yet. 10 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted June 1, 2019 Report Posted June 1, 2019 Looks like a fine job Anthony! Best advice is be patient and don't rush things, make sure previous coat is dry before proceeding, and your on your way. Also, be careful, you've been fortunate so far but things can turn nasty.....proper ventilation, gloves,etc....and safety glasses aren't the worst idea. Best of luck, -S- 2 Quote
0331_usmc Posted July 20, 2019 Author Report Posted July 20, 2019 Finished some more spoons in the fuki technique. They are cherry, walnut or maple and each has 6-8 coats. I am working on serving boards and possibly sword stands and tsuba stands as well. Also, got my first and second urushi rash. Second time was not fun. Luckily, im in healthcare now and a steroid shot shortened my suffering. 4 Quote
Stephen Posted July 20, 2019 Report Posted July 20, 2019 Fine looking spoons. Always wanted that talent. Quote
0331_usmc Posted July 20, 2019 Author Report Posted July 20, 2019 Stephen, should we ever meet up I will give you one and buy you a beer! 2 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 20, 2019 Report Posted July 20, 2019 Anthony, that looks like fine work indeed! You chose the more difficult way (which I like) with transparent URUSHI; I think it would have been somewhat easier to work with filler and have an opaque coating! Quote
0331_usmc Posted August 23, 2019 Author Report Posted August 23, 2019 Latest project is a charcuterie board. Just need to find some meat and cheese now. 3 Quote
ChrisW Posted August 23, 2019 Report Posted August 23, 2019 Might I recommend a fine steak to go upon that board? Can't beat steaks and beer! 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted August 25, 2019 Report Posted August 25, 2019 Very nice work on all of those, Anthony. Quote
Peter Bleed Posted August 25, 2019 Report Posted August 25, 2019 Anthony, How's your - ahhh - poison ivy rash? Monkeying around with urushi always looked to me like risky business. Peter Quote
0331_usmc Posted August 26, 2019 Author Report Posted August 26, 2019 The rash is not fun and lasts over a week. Im free of it now. I wear gloves and wash thoroughly, but still seem to get it. Quote
Rich S Posted August 27, 2019 Report Posted August 27, 2019 Might I recommend a fine steak to go upon that board? Can't beat steaks and beer! I would disagree. You can't beat steak and scotch! Rich Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted August 29, 2019 Report Posted August 29, 2019 I would disagree. You can't beat steak and scotch! Sure, you can! A nice, well-aged Cabernet or Merlot with the steak, & the Scotch, afterwards! Anthony, if you happen to have woodworking equipment, including a vacuum, try doing your urushi under the collector while the vacuum is running. That's what my wife does, & she's never had a rash, although we do have to change out the filter more often. 1 Quote

What does your wife make? 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted August 31, 2019 Report Posted August 31, 2019 Mostly bowls that we turn. But, since we're both still amateurs at turning, the results have a long way to go! At least we have a lot of cool woods out here in the tropics. Quote
Stephen Posted August 31, 2019 Report Posted August 31, 2019 Can i come live with you Ken....lol Quote
