ChrisW Posted May 18, 2019 Report Posted May 18, 2019 Hey guys! You'll probably be able to point out the flaws in it. I can tell that the ends are a bit off center, but this is my first attempt at sageo tying; so I thought I'd share it with you all! This is on a wakizashi that I bought from a guy here and I replaced the tsuba with something I felt fit the piece better. Obviously the sageo's coloring is off for this, but its the closest I could find. I am still fairly proud of it (maybe my boy scout days are paying off, maybe not), though I am sure I'll look back on it years from now and shake my head. 2 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 Chris, A very fine first effort, most make quite a mess of things, keep at it you've a natural affinity for this work....well done! -S- Quote
Vermithrax16 Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 Looks good to me, and I need to tie one, so if anyone has some tips, feel free to post them! Quote
ChrisW Posted May 19, 2019 Author Report Posted May 19, 2019 Youtube is your best friend for this. I followed this lady's lead. She explained and showed it very well and seems to be very skilled at it. 1 Quote
Vermithrax16 Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 Thanks Chris, will give it a go tomorrow. Wish me luck....... Quote
ChrisW Posted May 19, 2019 Author Report Posted May 19, 2019 Best of luck Jeremiah! Do the paper trick she shows, it prevents fraying of the ends! 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted May 19, 2019 Author Report Posted May 19, 2019 Thanks for the complements guys! I'll definitely keep at it. I'll just have to get more nihonto that are ready for this sort of treatment. Maybe my Sukesada should be next after all! Quote
16k Posted May 19, 2019 Report Posted May 19, 2019 Looks very good for a first try. At the beginning, the tricky part is to make them tight Quote
ChrisW Posted May 19, 2019 Author Report Posted May 19, 2019 Basically, I treated it like doing a really fancy version of a lashing. Just as JP says, keeping it tight was key. Quote

PNSSHOGUN Posted May 20, 2019 Report Posted May 20, 2019 I gave up long ago and the swords I have with Sageo are like this: 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted May 20, 2019 Author Report Posted May 20, 2019 I have a Kanesada like that, it needs a tsuka assembly made for it and then I can tie it proper. Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted May 20, 2019 Report Posted May 20, 2019 I gave up long ago and the swords I have with Sageo are like this: If you're doing iaido, then you need to leave the sageo like that. 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted May 21, 2019 Author Report Posted May 21, 2019 I can't claim to know much about iaido. Why is it preferable? So its easy to attach to one's belt? Quote
Robbie Tsunami Posted May 22, 2019 Report Posted May 22, 2019 Wish I could find a video guide for some unique knots that look good. All I've been able to find is the butterfly knot posted above and slight variations like the 'ronin knot' which is basically the same knot except the cord doesnt go both ways. I've gotten a bit bored having the same knot on every sword. Quote
Stephen Posted May 22, 2019 Report Posted May 22, 2019 Guido gave a good one in pdf in this thread. http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/26201-tying-bad/?hl=tying Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted June 2, 2019 Report Posted June 2, 2019 Robbie, I just stumbled across https://www.animatedknots.com/, which might be helpful. I can't claim to know much about iaido. Why is it preferable? So its easy to attach to one's belt? Chris, each iaido ryuha seems to have a different way to attach the saya to the obi, ranging from letting the sageo hang completely loose over the saya, to tying it in a very-specific knot in a very-specific location on the obi. In all of these cases, it isn't appropriate to self-knot the sageo. 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted June 2, 2019 Author Report Posted June 2, 2019 Ah, I see! So basically what I've done is for display purposes only. Does iaido make use of wakizashi and tanto sized-blades though? Or is it more restricted to katana? Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted June 2, 2019 Report Posted June 2, 2019 It depends on the ryuha as to which weapons are used, but I haven't trained in any that use tanto. I own several yoroi-doshi that I think would come in handy, but they would probably be last-resort weapons. Quote
Logan09 Posted June 2, 2019 Report Posted June 2, 2019 Out of 12 Saya this is only one I have tied sageo on. Quote
Robbie Tsunami Posted June 5, 2019 Report Posted June 5, 2019 Ken, I've thought before about trying all sorts of modern knots on a sageo. To see if they look cool and just to learn how to tie different kinds of knots. That site is great, the knot of the day especially will make it easy for someone casual about it like me to pick up some new knots. Thanks! -Rob Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted June 5, 2019 Report Posted June 5, 2019 Amazing what you can find on the Web -- including NMB!! Quote
