vajo Posted May 17, 2019 Report Posted May 17, 2019 I purchased this lovley big tsuba from a well known member of this board. I try to find out about the motif. My guess is a small (tea) table and a stylized kiri mon. Timeline around 1500 - 1600. Did anyone of you have a comparable tsuba or seen this design elsewhere? 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted May 17, 2019 Report Posted May 17, 2019 Interesting TSUBA!I don't know about the design, but I don't think it is a TOSHO. Quote
JohnTo Posted May 17, 2019 Report Posted May 17, 2019 I think that the design on either side may be the bridges (ji) used on koto (stringed instrument). I've seen similar on other tsuba. regards, John 1 Quote

TETSUGENDO Posted May 17, 2019 Report Posted May 17, 2019 Hi Chris, table is a possibility as is a drawer pull. Also take a look at this design element(circled) on the facade of Himeji Castle, Osaka. Cheers, -S- 5 Quote
vajo Posted May 17, 2019 Author Report Posted May 17, 2019 Oh wow Steven, that looks very similar. So the kiri mon makes sense too? Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted May 17, 2019 Report Posted May 17, 2019 Could well be Chris. this design is often interpreted as drawer pulls but in this instance perhaps not. At any rate it's a nicely balanced design with lots of character. Cheers, -S- 1 Quote
