ww2colorado Posted May 16, 2019 Report Posted May 16, 2019 hello all, new member here from colorado, militaria collector. i had been advised by another collector to come here to learn and share. my main interests are Japanese military history and weapons. i mainly pickup edged items from veteran estates etc. i would like to post this ww2 naval katana for review, i would first need help with the translation with the mei, i got this one local with some others that i will post soon. any info is always greatly appreciated, this one could use abit of love and deserves to be re wrapped etc. i am unsure of what the signature inside the star stamp reads as well as the mei. i can post specific pictures upon request, i am having trouble rotating my pictures of the mei the correct way Quote
Jason N Posted May 16, 2019 Report Posted May 16, 2019 I am also a new member, and still have a lot to learn, but to my eyes, there is nothing about that blade that is Japanese. Quote
Ray Singer Posted May 16, 2019 Report Posted May 16, 2019 Definitely Japanese. Looks like a Showato by Fukumoto Kanemune. Dated 5th month of Showa 20 (1945). 2 Quote

Bazza Posted May 16, 2019 Report Posted May 16, 2019 Sir (please sign your name so we can address you politely), its not a star stamp, its a cherry blossom stamp (a stamp is known as a kokuin) with characters inside. I'm not sure, but mates is this a Chimata stamp??? The word just popped into my head!!! BaZZa (aka Barry Thomas) Quote

ww2colorado Posted May 18, 2019 Author Report Posted May 18, 2019 Would this be a traditionally made blade? Quote
Jason N Posted May 18, 2019 Report Posted May 18, 2019 Would this be a traditionally made blade? I believe Ray answered this question referring to the sword as Showato. Showato were mass produced for military use and oil quenched. Not traditionally made, sorry. That said, it has worth as a piece of military history. Quote
