Hello Forum,

I have a question, and I don't even know how to start :)

A seller here has a curious piece i am interested im. It is some kind of tanto, in Aikuchi, but I have never seen a blade like that. It is very low built, one side is flat, with file marks, the other has huge and beautiful hamon, so almost a katakiriba-zukuri, but like I said, one side has old filemarks. The blade itself is elegant, almost small, but not a kogatana! It is much larger, has a different shape, and has the tiniest little habaki I have ever seen (maybe half the height of the koshirae). The tang has mei on both sides, and the whole thing is just gorgeous. I do not have pictures, and it will be a few days before I can see it again, so I thought I will try it here.

The seller simply called it "Aikuchi Tanto" which does not help much. But he said it is extremely rare and I have not found a single picture in any book or on the internet until now.

Does it ring a bell to someone?

thanks,

If you can’t find any reference to something like it anywhere, I’d tread with caution...

Without pictures it is tough. The are oversize kogatana that fit this description. Does it have a mekugiana?  I have one such that I got from Curran and is published, Okogatana. John

Hi,

Thanks for the help!!!!

I think something like this must be it. The nakago was longer, but after searching for o-kogatana i found some that resemble what is being offered. Tough none were in Aikuchi koshirae, that adds a whole new dimension.

So worth considering you think? Polish was very good, aikuchi in good condition...

Thanks,
