Ken-Hawaii Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Trying-new-sword-JYUMONJI-YARI-spear-w-SAYA-HIROSHIGE-EDO-26-12-8/123729954179 This yari is huge! It's easily twice as large as my own Jumonji yari, & I'm wondering if there is any real purpose in having a yari this large, in this shape? Quote
ChrisW Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 Sheesh! Its massive. Perhaps for dismounting samurai on horseback or just pure intimidation? Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 10, 2019 Author Report Posted April 10, 2019 Edo period is a bit late for Samurai on horseback as a major fighting style, isn't it? But I agree that if I saw this yari pointed at me, I'd want to go elsewhere! Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 10, 2019 Author Report Posted April 10, 2019 Why would you need a huge yari for alternate attendance, Geraint? Not following. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 Making more of an impression on the Sankin Kotai than other Daimyo trains? Makes sense, until everyone was forced to cut back on expenses. Or it could be a special order, or a smith's swansong, etc. (?) When they say 'cracks', do they mean chips, I wonder? And they have not yet figured out the difference between: a) there are few cracks b) there are a few cracks. 2 Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 The width seems relatively normal, the length is outside of the norm. I'd be comfortable with it I think. John Quote

Just in case kind of a thing, where the buyer needs to look real good at pics to determine "is there or isn't there". Personally I think she's using "cracks" to describe general damage with possibility of hagire. Send a message asking about hagire and depending on item, you get a yes or no answer. Make sense? Quote

Peter Bleed Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 This is a trinket - IMHO, I don't think it was made to be functional. Peter Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted April 10, 2019 Author Report Posted April 10, 2019 Who says it has to be a major fighting style to dismount a rider on horseback? It's a tad easier to do with a rifle. You may be right, Peter. More of a "mine is bigger than yours" trinket. Quote
ChrisW Posted April 10, 2019 Report Posted April 10, 2019 The old game of 'whose is bigger' never does end. Quote
