With you having a Showato blade the only issue with a mineral oil is that it is not good for the wooden liners. You might go over to Ballistol which is supposed to be ok for just about any material, or Kurobara camellia oil which is the one that is used on the high quality Japanese chefs knives. 

 

 I use Kurobara on all my Japanese blades, Showato and Nihonto, it saves having too many bottles lying around.

Hi,

I'm sure this is the first time this blade saw any type of oil in years... but I wont use it again, as yes my scabbard on the inside is wood. 

Should i clean the 3n1 off of it now?

 

That being said,  regarding the Ballistol oil, I thought that oil was not good for Katana blades, as its meant for guns, I thought i read that when learning how to clean the one i have.

 

I have not heard of the Korobara oil, ill see if i can get that locally. 

 

I don't expect to be cleaning it perhaps once a year i guess, i mean how often should it be oiled?.

Scott, your sword looks very nice!

As to the oil now on your blade, wipe the blade down with a clean dry cotton rag [old T shirt, mostly cotton is okay], too much of any oil is bad because it will soak into the wood of the saya and collect dust etc which can noticeably mark a blade that is in polish. I would then look for a good quality blade oil [recommendations can be found on these forums] and then check and re-oil with your new oil and continue the same routine every couple of months or so. The frequency will probably depend on the relative humidity where you live.
