These two came through from an estate that included a possible Persian yataghan (it may be an Indian copy) and some contemporary repros.

With the small knowledge I have, I've tentatively assigned these to early 20th Century, pre-WWII, but obviously, I'm here looking for expertise.  All input welcome.

Larger, higher resolution photos that are IN FOCUS would be most helpful.  Close ups ditto.

What is not in focus? They appear fine to me.

I can shoot another round this evening and host on my site to save bandwidth here.

For some odd reason, the katana reminds me of a (maybe gimei) Sendai Kunikane blade I have. Hmm...let's see what more pics show.

They are in focus, but I think the light and the talcum are making it a bit difficult to read. I will try and rotate them and re-upload.
I would think the katana to be a Shinto....but far earlier than 19th c.
Can we get an overall shot of the tanto without fittings or habaki?

Nice Higo Tsuka ... Swor dis probably Shinto periode. If the Mei is good it is a nice setup. I also like the Tsuba. Will need some good cleaning though.

Tanto is probably Sue Koto.

Your images are too small to say much.

Interesting that both mekugiana aren't round. Overlapping holes? Something else that requires a slot, rather than a hole? Yes, much higher resolution, please.

I noticed that. I haven't seen that before. I wasn't sure if it was a sign of a rehilt, just close to the first.

I don't know if I can get a better picture of the signature.  Would it help to fill with white out or something similar? Or direct light for shadow?

Jussi has, indeed, given an apparently accurate rendering of the signature, BUT I'd still like to see the nagako without that chalk! The dust does NOTHING but get in the way.

Difficult to say much about it...we at least need an overall shot of the whole thing.
Best I can say is that it is genuine. Age...hard to say in that state, but the catch-all would be Edo :)

Dear Michael.

Not necessarily the case, it is quite common with shorter blades to find a longer saya with more curve and almost impossible to find a saya that will fit another blade well.  If you want to check then a thin dowel or some other item will easily tell you the depth of the saya which you can compare with the blade.  As long as it's a good fit when assembled you have nothing to worry about.

All the best.
