Robin Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Hello gents, It's been a while since I got myself a new tsuba, but this one drew my attention...I like it a lot. Will be my birthday present from my wife. Eagerly awaiting now. Photo's are from the seller. Iron, 78,6 x 77,0 mm, thickness nakago ana 5,4 mm, rim 5,8 mm, nakago ana 28,9 x 8,4 mm, 95 grams, mumei. Said to be Edo period. I don't know about the school and age. Tried to match it, but far from sure what it can be (Echizen, Bushu-Ito, Higo....Shoami?) Your wisdom will be appreciated....and hope you like it also. Robin 10 Quote
Brian Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Don't know the school, but it is lovely! Congrats. 1 Quote
Steves87 Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Id love to help Robin, but im here to learn about it also. That is a wonderful Tsuba which id love to have myself, Congratulations and happy birthday! 1 Quote
christianmalterre Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Robin, i do confess i do not know at all! This is indeed a fascinating Tsuba! I never had such seen in all those various collections i saw-nor did i have the possibility so to study such yet..... from points evaluating its age.....i think, this is maybe older then the seller who sold it to you told you about....Edo yes....but early.( maybe Kanbun ? ) The overal taste of its arangement and execution of Seppa-Dai and Hitsuana clearly suggest a rather earlier piece here....Dito the shape of Hitsu-Ana and the cut-out and punch marks.... The iron is very good! Equally its general preservation..... This Tsuba got well cared in its past history. A good sign! A nice Tsuba! my honest congratulations and a happy Birthday to you! ! Kurikata Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Elegant. I wish to have it in my collection.... 1 Quote
MauroP Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Hi Robin, the tsuba here below has at least a certain resemblance with yours, and got an attribution to Unshū Haruta. Happy birthday, Mauro 2 Quote
Robin Posted March 31, 2019 Author Report Posted March 31, 2019 Thanks gentlemen! Nice to see I'm not the only one who likes it. (phew!) Unshū-Haruta (Echizen, Izumo?)....that will be pretty obscure. I can't find much about this school. Intriguing! Robin Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Great piece Robin, a real rhythmic and dynamic piece of design, so much better than the piece posted for comparison. Cheers, -S- p.s.-Birthday wishes, many happy returns of the day! 2 Quote
vajo Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 This Dragon is absolut unique. Look he his holding his neck with his claw. Great Robin. Congratulation to such a nice Tsuba. And happy birthday. 2 Quote
Robin Posted March 31, 2019 Author Report Posted March 31, 2019 Thanks guys! Still 5 weeks to my birthday, but it feels like it's today now. Kinda strange nobody else bought it before I got the green light. It was on ebay for at least a full week for a (very reasonable) fixed price...no bidding. Lucky me! Robin Quote
vajo Posted March 31, 2019 Report Posted March 31, 2019 Looks like Matzu Kaze. Good buy Robin. 1 Quote
Robin Posted April 8, 2019 Author Report Posted April 8, 2019 Looks like Matzu Kaze. Good buy Robin. Indeed, indeed. And just one week later. The typical Japanese (my experience anyway) fantastic customer service did it again! Boxed like they're sending the Crown Jewels What's not to like? Over the moon with this one...floats my boat on so many levels. Still wondering about the school and it's age, but can't have all the answers I guess. Robin 5 Quote
Japan2112 Posted April 8, 2019 Report Posted April 8, 2019 Very nice carving on that one. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 1 Quote
Robin Posted April 16, 2019 Author Report Posted April 16, 2019 Thanks guys! Did a crazy lot of compairing to other tsuba. After eliminating....Owari, Akasaka, Proto-Akasaka...or perhaps Higo after all? I asked Elliot Long...he will ask Robert Haynes. When it turns out to be "just nice" it might go on my iaito...when it's "above just nice"...I won't do that of course. Robin Quote

Brian Ayres Posted April 17, 2019 Report Posted April 17, 2019 It isn’t “just nice”. It’s “sooooo nice”. Have Kevin Adams make you an utsushi for your iaito. 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted April 18, 2019 Report Posted April 18, 2019 Robin, you can do all the eliminating you like, your Tsuba is still as attractive and enthusiastically received the second time around. Of course it would look great mounted on your iaito, but please no....its far to good for that. -S- 2 Quote
Stephen Posted April 18, 2019 Report Posted April 18, 2019 Boy was i asleep at wheel on this one. Great pickup Robin! Dragon master envious. 1 Quote
Robin Posted April 26, 2019 Author Report Posted April 26, 2019 I just received the Haynes & Long verdict: "Ko-Shoami...a very nice piece". I'll look after it and cherish it...so no iaito career for this one. Robin 3 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted April 26, 2019 Report Posted April 26, 2019 Good news Robin, the "thumbs up" is no surprise. Glad to hear your beautiful Dragon has a, well deserved, toil free future ahead! Cheers, -S- 2 Quote
Robin Posted May 10, 2019 Author Report Posted May 10, 2019 On Facebook a helpful soul just found this auction on Aoi Art... https://www.aoijapan.com/tsuba-mumeiunsignednyochin/?fbclid=IwAR0z7NVeWp-if8RfxCkFzTpv92ILwuvCAYhsnCp7kVTXXQ1D5I8lJzS0Fqs It's a slightly smaller sister tsuba. NBTHK Hozon...attributed to the Myochin school. Mine is nicer I think. Quote
vajo Posted May 10, 2019 Report Posted May 10, 2019 Your's is much nicer Robin. But the AOI Tsuba would make a nice Set with yours. 1 Quote
Robin Posted May 10, 2019 Author Report Posted May 10, 2019 Your's is much nicer Robin. But the AOI Tsuba would make a nice Set with yours. I was afraid someone would mention that! I'm sitting on my hands not to bid...but...but...argh ! 2 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted May 10, 2019 Report Posted May 10, 2019 Design and execution of you tsuba is more refined Robin...it stands alone, although a set would be interesting! Cheers, -S- 2 Quote
vajo Posted May 10, 2019 Report Posted May 10, 2019 Robin the motif is not often seen. And how many chances you get to find another? 2 Quote
Tom Darling Posted May 28, 2019 Report Posted May 28, 2019 Robin, You tsuba is a standout, there is no comparison. Very fine! Tom D. 1 Quote
