16k Posted March 7, 2019 Report Posted March 7, 2019 Julien, There is an interesting article with pictures about this in “The Art of the Japanese Sword”. 1 Quote
SAS Posted March 7, 2019 Report Posted March 7, 2019 This is only (my) opinion, but these processes tend to be closely held, and learning is not easy without a lot of research; the book listed above is a good reference. There are also videos on Youtube that are helpful. One must understand what the purpose of the clay is, and how the corresponding steel structures are formed in the quench. My avatar shows one of my blades in the forge, clayed for a notare hamon. 2 Quote
Julien16 Posted March 8, 2019 Author Report Posted March 8, 2019 Everybody, thanks a lot for your responses. i will check "The Art of the Japanese Sword” (thanks for the reference Jean Pierre). Steve, i'm a "new" blacksmith (at the beginning of my carrier) but i got some bases concerning structure. I'm sure i need to understand more closely (perlite formation (globular,...) etc...etc.. etc...). I knwo experience is the best in order to learn but, sometimes, books and informations are needed hard ! Youtube is full of ressources that's sure. If somebody got another informations (especially books), i'm in guys (and girl, no offense) ! Thanks again. Julien G Quote

Greg F Posted March 12, 2019 Report Posted March 12, 2019 Hi Julien and welcome, for making small bldes like Japanese style chef knives I use fireplace cement from local hardware and it seems to work well will 1095 especially if you leave the blade surface a little rough so it sticks and is less likely to fall off in the forge. My best advice would be to get as much info as you can from all over. Good luck. Greg Quote
