O-Midare Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 For a Sword with a fatal flaw does $750 seem a little steep or is it just me. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/-Wakizashi-Hoshu-Takada-jyu-Fujiwara-Yukinaga-Koshirae-wound-exist-50-7cm/264215270064?ul_ref=https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11021.m43.l1120/7?euid=5626e3a901cd48c6bb3c5e8ed2937e92&bu=43332463097&ut=RU&loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.ca%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F264215270064&sojTags=bu=bu,ut=ut&srcrot=e11021.m43.l1120&rvr_id=0&rvr_ts=3585d9301690ac1c878772fbffdf5fc4&ul_noapp=true&pageci=81decd1f-2812-49e1-9a14-2b976298dcd3&redirect=mobile Quote
ChrisW Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 I can see a chip in the kissaki but no kagire. Or am I just blind? Quote
O-Midare Posted February 28, 2019 Author Report Posted February 28, 2019 Scroll down in the photos further you will see a close up of the Kissaki, huge crack. Quote
SteveM Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 The crack extends from the chip. Looks nasty. 2 Quote
ChrisW Posted March 1, 2019 Report Posted March 1, 2019 Oh jeez, you're right... that's basically the entire hardened martensite edge peeling off there. If allowed to progress, it looks to have the potential to separate the entire blade. Yup. Definitely garbage unfortunately. It'd take far more skill to fix than its worth. The only thing I can think of would be to redefine the tip geometry entirely by redoing the kissaki's curve... that's only if there's enough hardened steel to keep as a suitable tip, but doesn't look like it. O-Midare Posted March 1, 2019 Author Report Posted March 1, 2019 I have zero interest in this blade, I was just thinking $750 was awfully steep. I guess you are really paying for the furniture. Quote

And some scrap processed tamahagane. I'm always surprised by how much those sword pieces go for eBay. There must be someone out there making a decent business turning old damaged blades into knives or something. 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted March 1, 2019 Report Posted March 1, 2019 There are a lot of knife makers here in the US that do buy scrap tamahagane for that very purpose, its pretty desirable for forging if you know how to use it correctly. 1 Quote
SAS Posted March 6, 2019 Report Posted March 6, 2019 That would require a lot of reshaping with no guarantee the crack would not propagate further; overpriced in my opinion. 1 Quote
vajo Posted March 6, 2019 Report Posted March 6, 2019 Dead one. I would not buy if its cheap or not. Its really ugly. 1 Quote
