James Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 This looks suspiciously close to the one bought by Max a few months ago... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=014 Quote
Stephen Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 new blade(repo) with old mounts...is this the same guy? Quote
James Posted July 20, 2008 Author Report Posted July 20, 2008 I feel sorry for the person who is going to win it (again). Here's the link to the original listing: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... :IT&ih=016 Looks to be the same one just in this new listing the leather cover on the saya has been removed. Quote
Jacques Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 Hi, This kind of gunto is far from being exceptional: http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/~t-ohmura/gunto_112.htm Quote
Stephen Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 more likly its one of these ment to decive? http://www.swordsoftheeast.com/index.as ... ProdID=145 Quote
Brian Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 Indeed, as Stephen said. There seems to be a fraudulent element that has realised it you take a cheap Chinese fake, grind the nakago until it press fits into Gunto mounts, and then list it on eBay as someone who knows nothing (with a "bid is final disclaimer") then you might just get everyone thinking they found a sleeper. Not saying this one is such a case, but please be careful. They are out there. If you are intererested, insist on nakago shots. And don't be fooled by new sellers who take bad photos. Sometimes they know exactly what they have. As I said..maybe this one is legit, but do check it out first and don't jump into a feeding frenzy. Brian Quote
James Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 I messaged the seller about the nakago and he replied: The peg that holds the handle on is glued so I can not remove it. Sorry I think that pretty much puts this one to rest. Quote
Stephen Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 James how did the one you bought on ebay turn out, it was in police or parade mounts. Quote
Brian Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 I saw it back for sale on eBay a few days ago, so I assume not all that well  Brian Quote
James Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 Brian said: I saw it back for sale on eBay a few days ago, so I assume not all that well  Brian That's right, but it sold at a profit so I'm not complaining :D Couldn't detect a temperline / hada, so figured it wasn't worth my time. I'd post a photo of the tang but it'll probably hurt your eyes. Quote
Stephen Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 PM me it if you like (or show in original thread) as i had that on bids to watch and if id been at home id have won. back to current bidding on the kogarasu...bids now up to where it might sting the wallet. what a crook Quote
Brian Posted July 24, 2008 Report Posted July 24, 2008 Hey, it's not proven yet that this is a forgery. Likely..but not proven. I suggest someone ask for the back of the tsuka..the original one seemed to have a mon or a removed mon? Might be another one that has been built up. Anyways..I certainly won't be taking a chance on it, but no proof for sure. Brian Quote
Grey Doffin Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 I just emailed the buyer and told him to be careful. Grey Quote
Brian Posted July 29, 2008 Report Posted July 29, 2008 Well done Grey, was going to do it myself. Frankly, when you hear those silly stories of "unable to take more pics because I am traveling and the sword is with me" you just have to wonder Brian Quote
