barnejp Posted February 17, 2019 Report Posted February 17, 2019 Hi Everyone, Need help on this woodblock print. Likely, by Gototei Kunisada. Publisher Yamamoto-ya Heikichi and Yamamoto Kyūbei. Question is: What's up with the this triptych not matching the each adjoining print? Thank you for any help. Best regards, Greg Quote
SteveM Posted February 17, 2019 Report Posted February 17, 2019 I can't see the bits you are worried about, but overall it seems OK to me, if a bit faded. Here is the original in, what looks to me, like a color-enhanced photograph https://blog.goo.ne.jp/55yasuji/e/305dea637a209ad9fcd12cfd1185629e Bear in mind a bit of misalignment on the edges is probably to be expected from a handcrafted print of 150+ years. Or, perhaps your triptych may have been assembled from different print runs, resulting in the prints being situated slightly differently on the paper. Quote
barnejp Posted February 17, 2019 Author Report Posted February 17, 2019 Thank you for your reply. Each print looks good. Signed: Gototei Kunisada Publisher: Eikyudo (Yamamoto-ya Heikichi and Yamamoto Kyūbei) Seal: Kiwame But, I can't understand the big and I feel the major mismatch between each print. Observing closely, just way off. Quote
barnejp Posted February 17, 2019 Author Report Posted February 17, 2019 Thank you Steve for the blog...however I can not connect. Do you have another example or know the name of the print? Quote
barnejp Posted February 17, 2019 Author Report Posted February 17, 2019 Stephen..Big time..thanks. Do you know the name of the print? And is the colour of my print mean anything...like its age or quality? Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 17, 2019 Report Posted February 17, 2019 Greg, Your print is a good quality image, but as others have noted it is rather faded. This print appears to have been produced in a number of color versions during its life, the one Stephen posted shows your version in an unfaded state. Read photo caption for print title. -S- Quote
barnejp Posted February 19, 2019 Author Report Posted February 19, 2019 Could it be an aizuri print? Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 19, 2019 Report Posted February 19, 2019 Could there have been a fourth print, missing from second from right? Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted February 19, 2019 Report Posted February 19, 2019 Hi Piers, The brain wants to make perfect visual order of things, so it suggests that the registration error can be rectified by a 'non-existant' fourth print. LOL! To my knowledge, this print was issued as a triptych only. Cheers, -S- 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 19, 2019 Report Posted February 19, 2019 Gulp! Er... so that is the (Cheshire) cat’s tail in the right frame? 1 Quote
