seattle1 Posted January 21, 2019 Report Posted January 21, 2019 Hello: I wonder if anyone knows of a work dealing with the sort of bonji found on Japanese swords that is more comprehensive than those contained in like of Kajihara's Glossary, Hawley's list, etc. I would appreciate the reference, Arnold F.

Curran Posted January 21, 2019 Report Posted January 21, 2019 Arnold, Do you have the Horimono book? It deals with bonji a good bit.
seattle1 Posted January 23, 2019 Author Report Posted January 23, 2019 Hello: A couple of days ago I posted an appreciation for the above references and particularly the high quality of Miss Dine's thesis, but it seems to have disappeared into the ether. Perhaps I should look for a book in Sanskrit that gives the readings. Arnold F.

It also gives pointers as to which artists are associated with certain Bonji. A sword I owned is in there as the reference for a certain longer bonji and the smith that used it. I don't use the book that often, but it is an excellent tome.
John A Stuart Posted January 29, 2019 Report Posted January 29, 2019 Sanskrit is a language not an alphabet, nor properly a script. Bonji is the Siddham script. Sanskrit at various times was written in, Grantha, Kharothsthi, Brahmi, Nagari, Devangari and Siddham, etc. scripts. https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco/wiki/Siddhaṃ_script.html John
Curran Posted January 30, 2019 Report Posted January 30, 2019 John, Thank you. Your link isn't working for me. I admit I could certainly use a primer on the topic.
