nickm Posted January 10, 2019 Report Posted January 10, 2019 Recently came across it a naginata through the forum as it would happen and am afraid in just now inspecting the blade truly that it has a hairline karasuguchi. It doesn't go through both sides nor does it seem to exactly run off the edge but is within a hair of doing so.. pics attached are as best as can be got of it.. Thanks in advance for anyone they can look Quote
nickm Posted January 10, 2019 Author Report Posted January 10, 2019 In truth the pictures make it look much more noticeable than I originally thought it was. Seems now to be a silly question Quote
Ray Singer Posted January 10, 2019 Report Posted January 10, 2019 Looks like a kitae-ware. Do you have a photo of the other side? Quote
nickm Posted January 10, 2019 Author Report Posted January 10, 2019 I will post one when I get back home but from what I could see it does not appear to be on the other side. Otherwise seemingly a rather nice blade so really hoping that I am paranoid Quote
nickm Posted January 10, 2019 Author Report Posted January 10, 2019 The other side. No trace in the area.. hoping for ware Quote
nickm Posted January 10, 2019 Author Report Posted January 10, 2019 Good news. Is this something the right polisher can remedy as I intend to have the blade polished anyway Quote
Peter Bleed Posted January 10, 2019 Report Posted January 10, 2019 This looks pretty seriously bad, IMHO. P Quote
nickm Posted January 10, 2019 Author Report Posted January 10, 2019 Essentially if it is ware I am not concerned with it as to be honest it has to be angled the right direction and you have to be 3" away to see it but if it is A crack of course it is a different story Quote
Ray Singer Posted January 10, 2019 Report Posted January 10, 2019 A kitae-ware in the hamon cannot be easily closed (compared with one in the ji where the steel is softer and can be moved more easily). It is unknown (at least me) if further foundation work would remove the kitae-ware or instead expose an even larger kizu. Is this something the right polisher can remedy as I intend to have the blade polished anyway Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 A kitae-ware in the hamon cannot be easily closed (compared with one in the ji where the steel is softer and can be moved more easily). It is unknown (at least me) if further foundation work would remove the kitae-ware or instead expose an even larger kizu. Usually it gets worse. It is not a fatal but serious flaw. Atleast a flaw that clearly would prevent me from investing any more money into this blade like getting it polished. Polishing a Naginata is usually especially expensive while on the other hand the demand for Naginata is lower. So you should make a carefull decisions. My advice would be to keep the blade as is and likely sell it in the future having learned something. 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 Usually with any sort of folded steel or differential treated, forging flaws like this in the hardened steel open up more as metal from the surface is removed. The hardened steel is less malleable and more apt to open instead of close. I think the guys are right in saying its best to leave this one as is. Quote
nickm Posted January 11, 2019 Author Report Posted January 11, 2019 Well I guess to simplify a long story disappointment is not the worst thing in the world because Otherwise there would be no appreciation for when things go better than expected.. As always thank you to everyone for your help. Going to be making a donation to the site today as this forum has already saved me a great deal of money And is well on its way to providing me education with significant value as well Quote
Surfson Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 Not fatal, but #$%^& ugly! I doubt a polisher can "fix" it. Quote
Brian Posted January 11, 2019 Report Posted January 11, 2019 I don't think it would be ugly in hand. Many of these flaws look harsh in close up photography, but in hand you barely notice them. Thanks very much for the offer of a donation Nick, it would be greatly appreciated. Quote
