Welcome to the Nihonto Message Board. One of the Internet's largest free English resources on Japanese swords and related topics.
This intro post will be constantly updated, but please read through it and familiarize yourself with the contents.

  • Please note that we require all posts to be signed with at least a real first name. A name and initial makes it even easier. There are 2 ways to do this. Either remember to sign each of your posts with a name, or do what most do. Go into your profile, and edit your signature so that your name is automatically added to every post.
  • Many questions can easily be answered by reading through the FAQ at the top right of the forum. This answers many questions and is worth a visit. Link is HERE
  • Although it is not compulsory, it is nice if you introduce yourself in the thread devoted to this, which can be found HERE
  • Uploading pics from cellphone: Please note that in many cases, pics uploaded from cellphones will be rotated when viewed. This is a common problem and happens because of cell orientation settings. If you upload pics and find them rotated, click on 'edit' on your phone, and save them again. Then edit your post, and reupload. Once edited and saved, they will not change orientation.
  • Remember that you DO have the option of editing your post for several hours before the option disappears. This means you do not have to reply to your own post to clarify or correct something. Just EDIT your post, fix it and save.
  • PLEASE check your email address that is associated with your membership. We have many members with old or redundant email addresses, that sign up for notifications but will never receive them. This also means you cannot request a password change, or many other options. Please make sure your email address is valid!
  • You should regularly go into your private messages and delete old messages and conversations. Aside from bulking up the database, you will reach your pm limit and not be able to send more.

Here are a general few guidelines that are not mandatory, but are good tips when posting, and are worth remembering:

  • If responding to posts, don't over-use the quote function. We do not need to be reminded of what you are responding to if the post is 2 or 3 posts above yours, and it just clutters up the thread. Quotes are useful if the original post is a few pages back, or you want to delete most of the post and just refer to one sentence. But do not get into the habit of using 'quote' instead of 'reply'
  • Don't necro-post. This refers to replying to a thread that is a year or 5 old. No need, unless your post is strictly relevant to that thread and adds to it. Otherwise start a new topic.
  • Don't take things personally. If you get advice you didn't want to hear, consider why that advice was given. If it is rude or insulting, report it so that an admin or mod can deal with it. Otherwise consider that maybe the poster is trying help you by being blunt and to the point. Sometimes this is the best way to get the point across.

Will be adding to the above over time. Enjoy your stay, have a thick skin if you find yourself corrected, and spend a lot of time reading before posting. Glad to have you here.
