Ray Singer Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Just sharing the results from my new camera (which is still a fairly basic mobile device). Very happy with the results, and in particular was trying to capture the depth of activity in the first sword below. 14 Quote

ROKUJURO Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Ray,Congratulations! A good camera and working light are everything in photographing NIHONTO! 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Great detail Ray, you made an excellent choice...best of luck with it! -S- 1 Quote
vajo Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 Very good shots Ray! The sword and the habaki are perfect photo models. Well done. 2 Quote
vajo Posted December 17, 2018 Report Posted December 17, 2018 One question, is this a LED lightbar or something like that? The light is very good. 2 Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 17, 2018 Author Report Posted December 17, 2018 Thank you all for the kind words. Standard lighting track with floodlights aimed down at a 45 degree angle towards the sword. 4 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted December 18, 2018 Report Posted December 18, 2018 Good DOF (depth of field). Which camera & lens are you using? Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 18, 2018 Author Report Posted December 18, 2018 The most basic mobile device. Motorola G4. I've actually never used a dedicated camera for sword photography. 2 Quote
Vermithrax16 Posted December 18, 2018 Report Posted December 18, 2018 The blade is magnificent but I am drawn to the habaki like a moth to fire! Great pictures Ray. Would love a tutorial. 3 Quote
Vermithrax16 Posted December 18, 2018 Report Posted December 18, 2018 Sometimes I forget what goes into the forging of an exceptional nihonto and the top flight fittings that sometimes come along with it. To see a picture set like this, makes me smile. 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 18, 2018 Author Report Posted December 18, 2018 I agree regarding the habaki. It's magnificent. I have always had a love for beautiful, well-made habaki. 4 Quote
Blazeaglory Posted December 18, 2018 Report Posted December 18, 2018 Good pics! I have a Samsung and a nice Olympic but BOTH are terrible at detailed macro shots. Even via the "macro" and "super macro" settings, the focus is horrible! Ive tried almost everything and the best I can get is some lucky center focus on my closer photos. Examples here show great clarity on small areas only. Im looking for something that focuses more of a whole such as your pics Ray (dont mean to thread hijack, just posting pics for comparison) Quote
b.hennick Posted December 18, 2018 Report Posted December 18, 2018 Here is something that you can try. Put a business card on the kissaki. Focus on the card and then remove the card. The point will be in focus. 4 Quote
kissakai Posted December 18, 2018 Report Posted December 18, 2018 How many of use will be trying Barrys tip? 1 Quote

Vermithrax16 Posted December 21, 2018 Report Posted December 21, 2018 I have been very pleased to see Ray's results. I am off work from today until January 2nd, so I figured I would try and see what I could do using some light angles, camera phone angles, magnification, etc. Let's just say......well most shots were not very good at all I did get 3 I like and they show the elegant masame work on the Norikatsu katana I have. Hope you all like: 15 Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 21, 2018 Author Report Posted December 21, 2018 Beautiful results Jeremiah. 1 Quote
Vermithrax16 Posted December 21, 2018 Report Posted December 21, 2018 Too kind Ray, but thanks. 1 Quote
EdWolf Posted December 21, 2018 Report Posted December 21, 2018 I was also inspired by Ray and his stunning photographs. I have tried but the results are a bit disappointing. Need more practice. 6 Quote
vajo Posted December 21, 2018 Report Posted December 21, 2018 Very good shots. I love to see more good pictures. Jeremiah nice sword. Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 22, 2018 Author Report Posted December 22, 2018 A few remaining pieces that I didn't have a chance to photograph last week. 7 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted December 22, 2018 Report Posted December 22, 2018 Jeremiah, your first shot is a textbook example of depth of field. Ray, have you tried using a polarizing filter to eliminate some of the jihada's glare? 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 22, 2018 Report Posted December 22, 2018 Ken, can one buy catch-all polarizing filters? 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 22, 2018 Author Report Posted December 22, 2018 Hi Ken, I have not. As mentioned above I am presently relying on a mobile device. I have not (yet) transitioned to a dedicated camera and for convenience handle all tasks (photography, image editing and uploads) via mobile. 1 Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted December 23, 2018 Report Posted December 23, 2018 Yes, Piers, polarizing filters are made for any size of DSLR lens, as well as for Android & iPhone. I have quite a collection, as I've been shooting everything from weddings to architectural photography since my college days. Never tried doing any serious shooting with my phone, mostly because I'm so used to having a camera in my hands. I have a Canon 6D, 7D, & two T2i DSLRs with 11 lenses, along with an SX50, SX70, & an old SD850 that I carry around in my butt-pack, so there's always a camera within reach. Ray, if you're shooting & editing your great photos on a mobile device, I've gotta' take my kabuto off to you! 3 Quote
