G'day all,

Can anyone tell me if there is a technical term for the polish feature that sits between the mune-machi and the yasurime (on the shinogi-ji)?

My own resources don't mention it and I'm unable to find the term on the net. I always assumed it was just an attractive way of finishing the burnishing on the shinogi-ji - is this correct?

Thanks all.

Hi Claig,

It is supposed to be the polisher signature (mei), it is found generally on Hon-zukuri blade on the shinogi ji, you won't find it on Hira zukuri blades. :)

Thank you Koichi-san and Jean, without knowing the correct term it would have taken quite some time to find that post. Very interesting about the polisher mei, I didn't know that. You learn something everyday...

Thanks again,

Sometimes you find this on the mune just above the kissaki. This style of mei is used by Honami school polishers, while signing and the shinogi-ji near the nakago is a tradition of the Fujishiro school polishing. I have read that the number of lines also has something to do with the polisher identity. Mike

Later comment; I recall reading somewhere about the difference in kesho mikagi that indicates the school of polishing, but trying to find this source brought me to "The art of Japanese sword polishing" where it says that honami school put these lines close to the nakago in pattern of thick line and then thin line. Sorry for the confusion. Mike

Hi all,

Does any one have any pics of the wood-burl or other pattern mentioned in the other thread? I've only ever seen the straight 'bar-code' examples.

Cheers,
