lotus Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 I am not a bronze guy but my first thought was this was one of those chinese fakes but perhaps I am incorrect. And the mei is on the wrong side... Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 22, 2018 Report Posted September 22, 2018 Patrick, You are absolutely correct.....Chinese fake. -S- 2 Quote

ggil Posted September 22, 2018 Report Posted September 22, 2018 I’ve seen this exact casting go for $900 on eBay, a few years ago. In that instance I was saved from Buying it by an expert I met on this forum. Trust Steven he is looking out for you. Don’t worry, this Tsuba has tricked many many people over the years. 3 Quote
lotus Posted September 22, 2018 Author Report Posted September 22, 2018 Yeah, it is currently fooling a number of people... Thankfully, I am not one of them! Quote

Sly Posted September 22, 2018 Report Posted September 22, 2018 Patrick, Have a look at this thread : http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/16069-signed-seishu-shakudo-tsuba/ Seems to be the genuine tsuba. Meiji period. Quote
seattle1 Posted September 22, 2018 Report Posted September 22, 2018 Hello: Any would be object that would not fit flatly, back and front, on a seppa ready for the koshirae cannot be considered a tsuba as it has lost any functional capacity irrespective of where it was made. Arnold F. 5 Quote
vajo Posted September 22, 2018 Report Posted September 22, 2018 That bonhams tsuba looks "wischiwaschi" in its design. No clear and sharp lines to much "ducheinander" in colors. It looks more like Hamamono. Compare it with that Tsuba: 2 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 22, 2018 Report Posted September 22, 2018 During Meiji/Taisho certain designs were produced in multiples, with or without variations, using traditional techniques ....they should not be confused with modern commercial cast reproductions. The original pieces, produced solely as "objet d'art", can/do sell for multiple thousands of dollars.....the reproductions are valueless. The relative merits of these pieces is up to each individual.....as far as the marketplace goes they have always found ready buyers and will, no doubt, continue to do so. -S- 4 Quote
lotus Posted September 22, 2018 Author Report Posted September 22, 2018 Say it isn't so!!! Red copper tsuba with gold, silver, brown inlay with a design of Fudo Myo-o(Acala) - Japan - 19th century Winning bid: $1,045 1 Quote

vajo Posted September 23, 2018 Report Posted September 23, 2018 The Patination is fake. Look at the hands, it is painted. 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 The surface is ridiculous, electroplating, chemical toner, and a bit of coldpainting, together with the obvious signs of casting the ersatz nature of this masterpiece is obvious. -S- 2 Quote
raaay Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 yip, another lovely Chinese fake , and one new happy owner , Quote
Ford Hallam Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 Chris S (Vajo) excellent choice of tsuba, superb patination, wouldn't you say? 1 Quote
vajo Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 Ford i would love to have one of these three Tsuba (I think they are from MfA). Quote
Stephen Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 Being this is real or fake thread. What do we think of this. Cloud looks painted on. Quote
vajo Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 From my noobish view its a massive bronce tsuba and not different metals which are patinated. I think it is colored. 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 25, 2018 Report Posted September 25, 2018 Stephen, Same, more mass produced rubbish, the garish electroplating is really hideous. -S- 1 Quote

TETSUGENDO Posted September 26, 2018 Report Posted September 26, 2018 This kind of fare seems a specialty of the site, apparently none of these 'collector's' have found their way to NMB. Can't blame them, with all the expertise available they can shop assured. Why waste you time and money studying and buying books when you could be adding to your collection....AH BLISS! -S- Quote
Stephen Posted September 26, 2018 Report Posted September 26, 2018 Books? what will they think of next! Quote

vajo Posted September 26, 2018 Report Posted September 26, 2018 Oh wow. Sorry i didn't know this. Very good. But what you think Ford about the thread starter Tsuba? Quote
Brian Posted September 26, 2018 Report Posted September 26, 2018 Man! Some of the tsuba in this thread make me want to scratch my eyes out.If it wasn't for those ones Chris posted that save my sanity ..... 3 Quote
Blazeaglory Posted September 30, 2018 Report Posted September 30, 2018 Crazy! You would think that someone willing to spend that much on an item would at least research first. Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 30, 2018 Report Posted September 30, 2018 Foolishly, the bidders felt confident with two "EXPERTS" attesting to the articles authenticity, this should make many take pause. Prepare yourself or prepare to be fleeced!!! -S- 1 Quote
