Surfson Posted September 16, 2018 Report Posted September 16, 2018 Very cool Bazza. They always look so badass. We should have a search for authentic samurai photos in which they have a toothy smile. I bet those would be hard to find! Quote
Stephen Posted September 16, 2018 Report Posted September 16, 2018 Well a lot to look thru many movie stills web site ids, and most of the samurai are staged that like you get at amusement parks dressed like cowboys and gangsters ect. but fun look none the less Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted September 16, 2018 Report Posted September 16, 2018 Robert, looks chinese to me... Quote
Surfson Posted September 17, 2018 Report Posted September 17, 2018 Accidental, I assume, at least based on the image title seen at the base. it's kind of a joke Carlo, but you don't see many photos of samurai laughing! Quote
Surfson Posted September 17, 2018 Report Posted September 17, 2018 Only authentic one I have found. 1 Quote
Surfson Posted September 17, 2018 Report Posted September 17, 2018 And I'm not really sure that is a smile! Quote

IanB Posted September 17, 2018 Report Posted September 17, 2018 Could be an attack of wind. On the subject of old samurai photos - I once saw one of a group in a street scene of a couple in armour and a guy with a yari wearing his katana in the usual position but edge down. After sniggering about it being a posed shot of a farmer who had been pressed into service who didn't know how to wear a sword, a Japanese gent pointed out that for a spearman it was correct. It moved the tsuka up out of the way when thrusting the yari by sliding it through the left hand. Ian Bottomley 1 Quote

Gakusee Posted September 17, 2018 Report Posted September 17, 2018 For education purposes, a lot of the images are albumen photos by Beato and have been coloured in subsequently. They are authentic in so far as Beato was taking them in the 1860s, just before the samurai era disappeared. Of course, there are photos by others (Shimooka, Ueno, etc). Some of the photos are taken in a studio but I have seen many taken outside of clan houses, in the open, etc. Original prints command high prices (eg a collection of 40-50 original prints is available for purchase at around $100-120k in the U.K.). 1 Quote
