Ray Singer Posted September 14, 2018 Report Posted September 14, 2018 I was just bought this lovely (and highly detailed) kozuka as a gift from a family member, and would appreciate help with an evaluation. Kaga Goto was suggested to me by a couple of individuals, but would love to hear other's feedback. The piece will be in-hand in the next day and I can provide further photos then if helpful. Kind regards, Ray 5 Quote
John A Stuart Posted September 14, 2018 Report Posted September 14, 2018 Strangest kozuka I've seen for a while. Kaga-Goto? Why this designation? It seems a very progressive rendition of kebori a la Somin. John 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 It is a curious piece, also quite beautiful and finely executed. From what I can see the nanako is very fine and regular.... This fact, along with the tight execution and inlay style, are the most probably reasons for the Kaga Goto attributions. Could be, then again. Better photos should throw clearer light on the matter. -S- 2 Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 Kaga Goto is a very reasonable call. Thanks for showing. 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 15, 2018 Author Report Posted September 15, 2018 Thanks for the insights gentlemen. While I did note the katakiribori in the screen being in the Somin style, I thought the kozuka overall had a more Goto execution. The kozuka will arrive today or Monday and I will add photos then. 1 Quote
Curran Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 I thought Kaga Goto. Late Goto might be a decent call too, but the design struck me more as Kaga. Why? Just a reflex based upon the design and execution. Kaga Goto had a fair share of katakiribori- just not at the Somin level. I do not have my copy of the Kaga Kinko Taikan available at the moment, but probably it would be good to go through it. A similar example may be found. 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 18, 2018 Author Report Posted September 18, 2018 For reference, a Kaga Goto kozuka I saw on Aoi which also incorporates kebori into the design. https://www.aoijapan.net/kozuka-mumeikaga-goto-2/ Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted September 19, 2018 Report Posted September 19, 2018 I much prefer yours, better example plus it appears to be in finer state of preservation. -S- Quote
Ray Singer Posted November 11, 2018 Author Report Posted November 11, 2018 Similar motif, and execution in katakiribori for design elements in the screen panels. https://www.aoijapan.com/kozuka-tokujyo-saku-mitsutakakao/ Quote
