earl Posted September 2, 2018 Report Posted September 2, 2018 This sword came from my grandfather who was in WW 2 and I would like to learn about it. He left it to my dad who is now in bad health and so he passed it to me now. I would like to find out what the insciptions say, as well as all I can find out about it, so I can tell my dad the rest of the story. Earl W. Quote
SteveM Posted September 2, 2018 Report Posted September 2, 2018 The sword is a good example of a sword made by a swordsmith called Kojima Katsumasa. The inscription says 濃州関住小島勝正作 Nōshū Seki Jū Kojima Katsumasa saku It means, "Made by Katsumasa Kojima of Seki, in Nōshū province". He is a relatively well-known swordsmith of the war era, and if you search his name on this site and others you will find many hits. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted September 2, 2018 Report Posted September 2, 2018 It's a Type 97 Navy Officer gunto (sword). The Seki stamp indicates it was made by other than "traditional" means. There were at least 9 different ways of making swords at the time, and anything other than the traditional method received an inspector stamp. 1 Quote
